Julian: Hey, guys, where did Autumn go?
Danny: Huh, I don’t know... I guess she was acting a little weird earlier.
Julian: Hey, you have Facebook open? Let me check something... oh crap! Today’s Autumn’s birthday! And she must think we totally forgot!
Payton: Maybe that’s because we did?
Julian: Oh, this is really bad... her dad’s out of town. I bet he didn’t even call her today.
Danny: That’s got to be why she was checking her phone earlier.
Julian: She’s probably all alone. It’s not like anyone at Hearst is gonna celebrate with her!
Payton: Aww! That’s terrible! And really, really true. Most of the people there hate her.
Julian: Danny, we gotta do something for Autumn! I know we’re busy, but a birthday’s only one day, man... and it would mean a lot to her if we did. What do you say?
Julian: You’ll help me? For real?
Danny: For real. Autumn’s a good friend. And no one deserves to spend their birthday alone.
Julian: Wow... thanks, Danny. You’re... you’re pretty all right.
Danny: Save the sappiness for Autumn’s birthday.
Danny: So what, exactly, are we doing for her?
Julian: Hmmm... big parties aren’t really Autumn’s thing. She’s more of a ‘quiet night with friends’ kind of girl.
Danny: That is shockingly sensitive for you, Julian.
Julian: Yeah, yeah, laugh it up. If I know Autumn, she’s off somewhere trying to act like everything’s okay, and pretending she’s not actually all sad inside... I figure, we should surprise her when she gets back with a nice, happy birthday get-together!
Danny: ...yeah. I think she’d like that.
Julian: We should probably also get her a present...
Danny: Got any ideas?
Julian: Well, she’s, you know, all artsy and artistic and art-like... what’s a thing she’d like?
Danny: A nice camera.
Julian: Oh yeah! That’s a good idea! She’s always taking those random, pointless, black- and-white photos of things!
Danny: You mean... art?
Julian: Yeah, that thing!
Danny: So do you want to go buy it?
Julian: Well... I... it’s just...
Danny: Don’t have the cash?
Julian: So what if I don’t?
Danny: Relax, Julian. Don’t worry. I’ll help you raise some.
Danny: Well, here you go!
Julian: Yeah... seems like a lot for some fancy camera... but if it’ll make Autumn happy, I guess it’s worth it.
Danny: So what now? We surprise her with the gift when she comes back?
Julian: I figure that’s good, right? I mean, what else do you need on a birthday besides a gift?
Danny: Well, usually there’s a cake...
Julian: A cake! Crap! it’s not a real birthday without a cake!
Danny: Relax, Julian. We can go grab one from the store.
Julian: No, not just any cake will do! It has to be from her favourite bakery, For Goodness Cake, which is two hours away!
Danny: ...really?
Julian: It might be corny, but they’re the best cakes I’ve ever had! And Autumn loves them. Come on, Danny. I’ll keep you company!
Danny: All right, Julian, you ready to go get that cake?
Julian: Sure thing, man! And I’m ready for this car ride! I even copied a bunch of Disney songs to my phone so we can have a singalong!
Danny: Really?
Julian: No. Of course not. What’s wrong with you?! We’re driving in silence and listening to Sportschat on the radio! Now let’s go!
Julian: We’re here. Can you go in and grab the cake?
Danny: Too cool to be seen in a place called For Goodness Cake?
Julian: No. Maybe. Yes. Shut up.
With a laugh, you head inside. The clerk turns and asks you what you’d like written on it...
Danny: Another year for our favourite artist! (That’s what Autumn will like, right?)
You head out and hop into Julian’s car. He checks the cake...
Julian: Aw, that’s cute.
Danny: I thought you’d like it.
A few minutes later, the two of you sit in the car as it rumbles down the highway.
Danny: So...
Julian: So?
Danny: Can I ask a personal question?
Julian: You can try.
Danny: What’s the deal with you and Autumn, anyway?
Julian: What are you talking about? There’s no deal.
Danny: Come on, Julian. You know what I’m talking about. I don’t think I’ve seen you care this much about anything that didn’t involve catching a ball or throwing a punch.
Julian: It’s just... when things got bad at Hearst... Autumn was the one who looked out for me. She’s got a good heart. I feel like... like I owe her this much.
Danny: You really care about her?
Julian: ...yeah. That’s one way to put it.
A little while later, you get back to your campus.
Danny: So what now?
Julian: Now? Now we get a few more friends together and make sure Autumn has the best birthday of her life!
Julian: Okay, is everyone ready?
Zayn: Yep!
Maya: Sure thing!
Alex: Let’s do this!
Julian: What do you guys think we should do? Just yell surprise when she comes in? Does that make sense? Is that a thing people do?
Danny: Is it just me, or is Julian more nervous than he is before a game?
Maya: Sure seems that way...
Julian: Could you all just shut up and hide? She’ll be here soon!
Autumn: Hello? Julian? Are you there? I know you wanted to talk, but today’s not the best day. It’s no big deal, just some personal stu--
Julian: SURPRISE!
Danny: SURPRISE!
Zayn: SURPRISE!
Autumn: What... what is this?
Alex: Happy birthday, Autumn!
Autumn: You... you guys are all here for me?
Danny: Of course!
Julian: And hey! That’s not all! Open your gift!
Autumn: OMG! Is that a vintage Furiyama film camera with fisheye lens and 200x zoom?!
Danny: It’s whatever they gave us when we asked for an artsy camera...
Julian elbows you in the side.
Danny: I mean, yes!
Autumn: It’s perfect!
Julian: Oh, we’re not done! Danny, give her the cake!
Autumn: Is that a For Goodness Cake box?!
Danny: Yep! And read what it says!
Autumn: Aww... Am I really your favourite artist?
Julian: Are you kidding? You’re the only artist I can stand!
Danny: Happy birthday, Autumn.
Autumn: Danny... this is... the nicest thing anyone’s ever done for me...
Danny: Julian and I did it together.
Autumn: Really?
Danny: Yep. We drove down together and everything.
Julian: It’s... you know... no big deal...
Autumn: No. It is. And it’s great.
Autumn grabs you both in a hug.
Autumn: Thanks, you two. Really.
Maya: Well? What are we waiting for? Let’s eat some cake!
Autumn: Hee hee!
Danny: Huh, I don’t know... I guess she was acting a little weird earlier.
