Payton: Danny! I’m so glad you’re coming to my holiday party!
Danny: I wouldn’t miss it!
Payton: It’s going to be so much fun! Everyone from school is coming, I’ve set up tons of activities, and I also invited all of the kids from the Little Buddy program I’m a part of.
Danny: Oh?
Payton: Yeah, they’re mostly kids who have been orphaned and are now with foster families. I like to do something extra special for them around the holidays... So every year, I throw this huge party, and they’re all invited! This year at the very end, I’ve even hired an actor to play Santa Claus and give them all gifts!
Danny: Aww... Payton. That’s so nice of you.
Payton: Hey, I know what it’s like to not feel like you have a family around the holidays... this... it’s the least I can do.
Payton: Anyway, hurry up! The party’s about to start! Oh, and don’t forget to bring a date!
Requirements
Danny: Hey, Berry... got a sec?
Berry: What’s up?
Danny: Would you be my date for the holiday party?
Berry: Of course! It would be my pleasure.
Danny: I was hoping you’d say that.
Berry takes your hand, and the two of you head into the holiday party...
Time - 6 hours
You and Berry walk into the ballroom where the holiday party is just starting. Buffet tables are set with every kind of delicious treat, from fudge to gingerbread to rugelach. All around the room, kids are enjoying different winter0themed activities. Some cut out snowflakes, others play with dreidels, and some are using markers to draw colorful Kwanzaa candles.
Berry: Aw, the kids all look like they’re having so much fun.
The entire room is decorated with fresh-cut pine trees trimmed with blue ribbons and gold ornaments. Silver menorahs and brightly-colored kinaras fill the room with warm, flickering candlelight. Huge gift-wrapped boxes are clustered under every tree, and fake snow falls delicately from the ceiling.
Danny: This... is impressive.
A flake of fake snow lands on the tip of Berry’s nose.
Danny: Heh... let me...
You brush the fake snow away, and Berry stares intensely into your eyes...
Danny: Berry...
Berry gently caresses your face and pulls you in for a tight embrace!
Berry: I’m so glad we’re here together, Danny. This night is going to be so fun!
Danny: I always have fun with you, Berry.
Berry: So what should we do first?
Danny: Maybe we should investigate that buffet table... the desserts smell amazing!
Berry: Then what are we waiting for?
You and Berry grab decorative red plates and fill them with brownies, latkes, fresh fruit, and sweets of every kind.
Berry: Did you see that there’s a sundae bar over there?
Danny: Yum!
Later, at the center of the room, Payton calls for everyone’s attention...
Payton: Ahem, ahem! Welcome everyone, to my holiday party!
Autumn: Woo!
Julian: Go Payton! Best holiday party ever!
Payton: Thanks, everyone, but the party’s just getting started! I’m about to build an ENORMOUS gingerbread house for the kids... and I’m going to need help to do it! Think you can handle the challenge?
Julian: I am so in.
Danny: Me too! But I think we’re going to need some help...
Autumn: Yeah, if this is going to get serious, we’re going to need some blueprints... I can handle the artistic side of it, but I’ll need some technical help.
Requirements
Payton waves everyone into a curtained-off workspace.
Payton: We can build in here and then do a big reveal for all the kids!
Danny: Okay, everyone... are we ready to build the ultimate gingerbread structure?
Maddie: I’m in... but first you need to answer one simple question... what are we building? A house? A mansion? A tower?
Payton: Ooh! We could build a cute little candy cottage with gumdrop windows and lollipop trees and...
Autumn: Or we could build Santa’s sleigh and all his reindeer!
Julian: Four words. Mega. Mecha. Fighting. Robot.
Zayn: All intriguing ideas... Danny? What do you think?
Danny: I say we build Santa’s sleigh and reindeer.
Zayn: A structural challenge? Let us begin!
Autumn: I’ll get started sketching the blueprint... Zayn, can you help me with the calculations on how big to make the base?
Zayn: Indubitably.
Autumn: Maddie, you can start gathering the materials and get everyone organized!
Maddie: Excellent!
Time - 8 hours
Zayn: This is really coming together! Is everyone about done?
Autumn: Yeah! Wow, these blueprints were great... the sleigh and reindeer can stand all on their own!
Zayn: AND everything is perfectly to scale.
Maddie: AND Julian and I even got some tiny lights rigged up to flash on and off all along the sleigh.
Payton: And Rudolph’s little nose is even red! Totes ah-maz-ing! This is the best gingerbread creation ever! The kids are going to love it. Ready to unveil your creation?
Danny: I think it’s time.
Payton pulls back the curtain and calls everyone over! The kids crowd around your gingerbread masterpiece and break out into applause!
Danny: I guess they like it?
Payton: Oh, I’d say it’s a TOTAL HIT!
Payton: And now... we eat!
Payton reaches over and breaks off a chunk of gingerbread! The kids all follow her lead, pulling off pieces and bits of candy!
Payton: Well, that should keep the kids busy... Danny, you should go do something fun! There’s a romantic horse-drawn sleigh-ride you can check out.
Danny: Oh yeah? Where’s that?
Payton: Over by the mistletoe of course! Just make sure you pick someone special to go with you...
Requirements
Danny: Hey! Thanks for meeting me under the mistletoe! Are you ready for that sleigh ride?
Berry: Yeah! Looks like we just have to wait for the sleigh to come back. And in the meantime... here we are under the mistletoe...
Danny: Yeah... here we are...
Berry: I guess it would be bad luck if we didn’t kiss, right?
You and Berry lean closer... and closer...
Time - 10 hours
Under the mistletoe, you and Berry lean in closer... and closer...
Berry: ...
Danny: ...
Until you meet, sharing a deep, passionate kiss!
Berry: That was...
Danny: Yeah. Wow.
Berry pulls you in close for another kiss... just as the sleigh driver pulls up in front of you!
Berry: Er, sorry... we got caught up in the moment. Now, where were we? Sleigh ride?
Danny: Sleigh ride! Right!
You and Berry climb into the sleigh. The driver flicks the horse’s reins, and the sleigh begins to move forward, quietly gliding over the snow-covered ground.
Danny: Wow, I didn’t realize this part of town was so beautiful.
Berry: Yeah, this is the perfect spot for a holiday party. Do you see all those pine trees? Mmm! You can smell them from here!
The sleigh glides along and you and Berry snuggle up together in the sleigh as a light snow begins to fall.
Berry: It’s getting kind of cold out here. Are you warm enough?
Just then, the sleigh driver turns around and hands you both mugs of hot chocolate!
Danny: Well, this will definitely keep us warm.
The sleigh glides through the woods, over a small wooden bridge, and back to the front of the building.
Danny: That was so fun!
Berry: I always have fun with you, Danny.
The sleigh ride ends, and you both head back inside to rejoin the party...
Payton: I hope everyone’s been having fun, because it’s time for our next event! The annual cookie cooking competition! And we still need two judges to help us pick our winner!
Requirements
Danny: Berry and I are ready to taste some cookies.
Berry: You know, if it’s for the good of the school...
Payton: Hee hee! Well, you’re in for a treat tonight! We’ve got three entries in the competition...
Autumn: My entry is ‘Iced Gingerbread Men’... with extra cute candy buttons!
Payton: You’ll also be trying my ‘Perfect Pecan Tea Cookies’...
Julian: And don’t forget my entry!
Payton: Oh, right... ‘Julian’s Jalapeño Delights’...
Danny: Well, this should be interesting...
Time - 12 hours
You try each of the cookies...
Danny: Aww, Autumn’s cookies are almost too pretty to eat.
Berry: Payton’s are delicious! They melt in your mouth!
Danny: And Julian’s are... ulp! Hand me that glass of water!
A bit later... you announce the results!
Berry: After a long and difficult deliberation, we’ve reached a decision.
Danny: The winner is Payton’s Perfect Pecan Cookies.
Payton: Yes! Though to be fair, I tried them all, and they’re ALL good. Um, except for Julian’s cookies, which tasted like burning.
Julian: Not everyone can handle them. I get it. I get it.
Danny: What’s next?
Payton: It’s time for us all to make like Santa’s helpers and build some toys!
Danny: Huh?
Payton: Every year, I buy a bunch of toys in bulk to give the kids... but, uh, there’s some assembly required... And Santa’s already on his way, so that means it’s time to make some toys for all the good little girls and boys! Who’s with me?
Requirements
Payton: All right, listen up, everyone! We have our work cut out for us... or rather, it’s cut up for us... The toys arrived in halves. We have to attach the tops and bottoms together before we can hand them out to the kids. Are you guys up to the task?
Danny: Let’s do this!
Berry: Count me in!
Ashton: Me too!
Payton nudges over three large boxes full of assorted toy halves. You see an odd mix of dinosaur heads, robot arms, shark snouts, and ballerina legs poking out.
Danny: Where should we start?
Payton: Let’s sort the tops from the bottoms first, and then we’ll work on putting them together...
Time - 9 hours
A short time later, you’ve sorted the tops of toys from the bottoms.
Payton: Great! First step done! Now this part should be pretty simple. You just take a top, and find the appropriate bottom, and snap them together!
Payton finds some ballerina legs and attaches them to a ballerina top.
Berry: No worries, Payton. We’ve got this.
Ashton: Yeah! Easy. We’ll be done in no time!
You, Payton, Berry, and Ashton get to work. You pick up a dinosaur head.
Danny: All right. Dinosaur head goes on the T. Rex body!
You put the dinosaur head on the T. Rex body, and it slides into place with a satisfying click!
Danny: Perfect!
Autumn walks by and sees your toy.
Autumn: The kids will love these, Danny!
Danny: That’s the hope!
You quickly finish assembling the remaining toys in the boxes.
Autumn: These are great, everyone! That’s a wrap! A gift-wrap! Hee hee!
Payton: Oh no... oh no...
Danny: Payton? What’s wrong?
Payton: I just got a call from the Rent-A-Santa I hired for the party... he was on his way from the mall when his car broke down!
Danny: That sounds bad...
Payton: He’s not going to be able to make it here in time! He won’t be here to play Santa for the kids!
Danny: So... we’ve got to tell the kids that Santa’s sleigh broke down, and he couldn’t make it?
Payton: No. No way, Danny. These kids have had enough disappointment and heartbreak in their lives! I’m NOT going to let my party be just another broken promise.
Danny: Whoa. This really means a lot to you, doesn’t it?
Payton: Before my parents adopted me, I had a really lonely time in the foster system. Moving from house to house, never knowing where you’ll go next... the holidays can be rough if you don’t feel like you’ve got a family. This party is supposed to be something fun that they can count on! I’m not letting it end in disaster!
Danny: So what do we do?
Payton: There’s only one thing TO do... we need a Santa. FAST!
Requirements
Alexandra: Ho, ho, how do I look?
Payton: The Santa costume looks like it fits perfectly... but are you ready to BE Santa?
Berry: I think we’ve got this down.
Alexandra: Ho, ho, ho! Berry is right! Leave it to us.
Payton: Okay. Where do you live?
Alexandra: Uh... across town?
Payton: No! You live in the North Pole. You have eight reindeer! You bring toys and spread joy to the children of the world! You got that?
Alexandra: Eep! Yes!
Payton: Berry, where are you from?
Berry: The North Pole!
Danny: So... what do you think? Problem solved?
Payton: This is going to be great!
Time - 13 hours
Payton leads the team into the room where a giant Christmas tree and big red and gold chair await!
Payton: All right, Santa, you sit here, and your elf’s going to stand next to you and help you hand out gifts!
Alexandra: Sitting!
Berry: Standing!
Autumn: Payton, I’ve got the gifts in this Santa bag here. They’re ready to go!
Payton: Awesome! I’m going to get the kids.
Payton disappears then comes back with the kids in tow.
Payton: Come on in, everyone! Santa’s in here!
The kids rush forward, surrounding Alexandra and Berry!
Alexandra: Ho ho ho! Hello, children! It’s so nice to see such a GOOD group of youngsters...
The kids laugh and giggle among themselves. Berry gets them to quiet down.
Berry: Now before we get to gifts, who wants to hear Santa tell a Christmas story? I know I do!
The kids enthusiastically wave their arms in the air, begging for the story!
Alexandra: ...and so Rudolph led my sleigh through the thick fog, helping me bring all my toys to every kids in the world!
Berry: And speaking of toys... Santa’s come all the way from the North Pole to hand out presents to good children...
Alexandra: Has everyone been good this year?
The kids chorus out an excited, ‘YES!’, and Alexandra and Berry start handing out presents!
Alexandra: Presents to all, and to all a good night!
With the kids happily distracted, you turn to Payton... only to find that she’s left your side!
Danny: Payton?
Requirements
You see Payton in the back of the crowd and head over to where she’s standing. As Payton watches the kids rip the wrapping paper from their toys, her eyes tear up...
Danny: Payton? You okay?
Payton: I... I just need a minute.
Time - 15 hours
You and Payton go over to the side of the room to sit and talk. As you walk, Payton wipes a tear from the corner of her eye.
Danny: Are you all right?
Payton: I’m just happy. It feels so... good to see those kids smile, y’know?
Danny: Yeah. They look like they couldn’t be happier.
Payton: Thanks, Danny. For everything tonight. I wanted to give them a perfect holiday party, and we did. This really meant a lot to me.
Danny: I’m always here for you. And for what it’s worth, everyone here... we care about you. And you can count on that. As far as everyone here is concerned, Payton, you’re family. And we’ll never let you down.
Payton: Awww! Danny!
Payton throws her arms around you, and you give her a big hug!
As the party draws to a close, all of the kids run up to thank Payton, giving her hugs and telling her how much fun they had!
Payton: No, thank YOU for coming! And don’t forget to take your goody bag of candy canes home with you!
As the last of the kids leave, Payton smiles and shuts the door behind them.
Payton: Well, it looks like the party was a huge hit!
Autumn: Those kids were grinning from ear to ear. This was definitely a holiday surprise that they’re never going to forget.
Julian: Yeah. It’s really awesome what you did for them, Prep.
Payton: Couldn’t have done it without you... all of you.
Autumn: And that’s what the holidays are really all about, right?
Payton: You know what’s going to happen now, right?
Danny: It’s a group hug, isn’t it?
Payton: Group hug!
Payton sweeps everyone up in a big group hug! Thank you for coming to Payton’s holiday party! Happy holidays from High School Story!
