Autumn: Danny! There you are. We’ve got to talk.
Danny: What’s wrong? You look scared!
Autumn: Some REALLY creepy things have been going on ever since that lamppost was installed! I’ve heard spooky sounds, almost like someone was crying, but no one was around! And that’s not all. People keep telling me that their jewelry is going missing, and the other day, I swear the words ‘Help me’ appeared on the bathroom mirror! And yesterday, I could’ve sworn that I saw someone lurking around the shadows, just past the lamppost!
Danny: That IS weird... what do you think is going on?
Autumn: This might be a silly question... but... do you believe in ghosts?
Danny: There’s no such thing as ghosts.
Autumn: So you don’t think ghosts could exist?
Danny: Of course not! Please... spirits and ghosts and ghouls? It’s all just made-up stuff for Halloween and horror movies.
Autumn: Oh...
Danny: You... YOU don’t believe in that kind of thing, do you?
Autumn: This might sound weird, but sometimes I get these... feelings... when I’m in graveyards. My mom always used to say that because I’m an artist, I’m extra-sensitive to the paranormal... Anyway, I’ve just got a really bad feeling that there’s something more going on here. Do you think you could take a look? I’m getting really scared!
Danny: Of course. We’ll check it out together.
Autumn: I know it sounds creepy... but I think the best way to do this is to just camp out at the school. We stay overnight and see what happens.
Danny: I’m in. I’m sure there’s a perfectly rational explanation for everything you’ve experienced...
Autumn: Maybe... but I’d still feel better if we had more backup if we’re going ghost-busting.
Danny: Hmm... I think I know just the person!
Autumn: Who ya gonna call? No. Really. Who are you going to call?
Requirements
Zayn: Before we go, I have to remind you that there’s absolutely no scientific proof to support the existence of ghosts. But that’s no reason to go in unprepared! So I brought my EMF detector, an ectoplasm bag, motion-sensor-activated cameras, rock salt, and grave dirt.
Autumn: Grave dirt?
Zayn: Dirt from a graveyard.
Autumn: I mean, I got that, but... creepy. And that ectoplasm stuff?
Zayn: For collecting samples! A little trust here? I’ve watches all five Paranormal Activity movies, so I’m basically an expert. So come on... we’ve got some ghost hunting to do!
Danny: Okay, everyone. Settle in... it’s going to be a long night...
Time - 2 hours
Around midnight, clouds crawl across the moon... a cold wind cuts through the school... and you start to hear a strange whimpering sound...
Autumn: Danny! Am I going crazy, or did you hear that?
Danny: Uh, yeah... I did, actually...
You all go quiet, and you hear the sound again, louder now... the whimpering turns into a high-pitched wail, wracked with shuddering sobs!
Zayn: Over there! I thought I saw someone!
Autumn: I did too! It was a girl! She ran that way!
The three of you run in the direction the girl went and come to the lamppost. Autumn halts and drops to her knees. Her hands go into the dirt at the base of the lamppost...
Zayn: Autumn? Are you okay?
Autumn pulls her hands from the fresh earth and reveals... a locket!
Danny: What IS that?
Zayn: It looks like it’s made out of real silver. Based on the way the metal’s been forged, I’d guess it’s at least 100 years old.
Autumn: It’s broken. Can’t you see that half the locket’s been snapped off? And the picture... it’s nearly all worn away...
You turn over the locket and see an inscription on the back... ‘I will wait for you.’ Suddenly, Autumn freezes up. She looks pale, shocked, almost like she’s in a trance.
Autumn: I... I can see her. She’s sick. She was sick, anyway. And she was waiting for someone... someone who never came. She died waiting here, back before this school was ever built... she’s still waiting...
Zayn: I knew something horrible must have happened here! Why else would this huge vacant lot be left empty for so long?
Danny: Wait... why did she show up now?
Autumn: It’s this locket. It was buried here, but the construction for the lamppost unearthed it!
Zayn: So we found the locket... now what do we do?
Autumn: She’s... angry. She wants something.
Suddenly, an ice-cold wind whips through the school corridors. The lockers lining the walls begin opening and slamming shut! Autumn runs to the walkway, and then stops. The lockers all fling open and pause, then shut one by one, leading down one side of the school. You and Autumn walk forward with Zayn following behind, the EMF detector going crazy!
Danny: Autumn... do you know what’s going on?
Autumn doesn’t answer, but as the last locker slams shut, you see one locker across the pathway that slams open and shut furiously, creating a banging clamor that makes Autumn jump each time.
Autumn: She’s angry... so angry... at this person... whose locker is this?
Zayn: I know her... she’s on the cheerleading squad.
Autumn: She’s done something wrong. We need to find her. We need to warn her! Now!
Requirements
You search the school as the sun starts coming up and find Mai practicing cheers on the school lawn.
Danny: Look! Around her neck... she’s wearing the other half of the locket!
Autumn: Mai! We need to talk!
Mai: Huh? Can it wait? I’m in the middle of cheer practice.
Danny: This is important. It’s about that necklace you’re wearing.
Mai: This necklace? Why? You like it? You’d never believe where I got it. I actually picked it up at a thrift shop! I almost never buy anything used, but something about this locket just called to me.
Autumn: I know this is going to sound a little weird, but you’ve got to give it to me.
Mai: Are you crazy? I love this necklace. Why would I give it to you?
Danny: You’ll WANT to give it to me after you hear what I have to say about it.
Mai: Oh yeah? And what’s that?
Danny: It’s ugly.
Mai: It is?!
Danny: And I’d be a HORRIBLE friend if I let you wear it for one more single second.
Mai: But... I thought it was rustic shabby-chic...
Autumn: More like just shabby.
Mai: Fine... take it.
Autumn reaches out to take the locket... the second her fingers touch it, a strange look comes over her, and her eyes roll up in her head! She falls... You reach out and catch Autumn!
Danny: Autumn...
You gently lower Autumn to the ground.
Mai: Good reflexes!
Danny: Thanks... but Autumn’s still out cold.
You touch Autumn’s cheek and pull back!
Danny: She’s freezing! Her lips are turning blue! Here, give me your jacket. We’ve got to bundle her up.
Mai: Autumn... wake up! She IS going to wake up... right?
Danny: Autumn!
Time - 3 hours
Suddenly, Autumn’s eyes flutter open. Her hand goes to the locket.
Autumn: So cold... snow everywhere...
Danny: Huh?
Autumn: It’s here... it’s all here.
She turns the locket over, and there are two names engraved on it. Daniella Montgomery and Jacob Smith. 1907.
Autumn: Quick, Danny. We need to look something up. What happened here 100 years ago?
Danny: Should I look it up on my phone?
Autumn: No... this is obscure local history. No one makes a Wikipedia page about this kind of stuff... but the history classroom has a copy of the town records!
You and Autumn head to the classroom, where you find a dusty copy of the town records and flip back to the events of 1907.
Danny: Looks like there was a bad illness that swept the town. The local blacksmith went out to bring back medicine, but there was a blizzard... and he never returned.
Autumn: He died in that blizzard! Danny, don’t you see? Daniella wasn’t abandoned. But she died thinking he’d left her.
Danny: But... what can we do now?
Autumn: We’ve got to set things straight!
Autumn: According to this, Jacob Smith is resting in a cemetery fifty miles away. If we can lead the ghost to his grave... maybe she’ll be at peace once she sees him...
Danny: You mean once she sees that he DID try to come back.
Autumn: Exactly!
A sharp wind cuts through the school, rattling the windows and knocking over a bookcase! Books cascade everywhere as you and Autumn dodge them!
Autumn: Let’s just hope we can do it in time... before this ghost destroys our school!
Requirements
Danny: Are you sure you want to go to the graveyard?
Autumn: There’s no turning back now.
Berry: Um, except for, you know, the VERY LITERAL sense in which we CAN still turn back...
Autumn: It’s going to be okay. We’re doing the right thing... I think.
The car pulls up to the cemetery. The three of you climb out and start walking through the dark night...
Autumn: Did you see that? Over there!
Autumn runs off!
Danny: Wait up!
Time - 4 hours
You and Berry catch up to Autumn! She stops in front of a gravestone. The air goes cold as soon as you step near it.
Autumn: This is it. I know it.
Berry: How...
Autumn: I just do. Check the name.
Berry: This... you’re right. Jacob Smith. Died in a blizzard over a hundred years ago...
Autumn places the two pieces of the locket on the gravestone, fitting them together.
Autumn: Wait... did you see that?
Autumn touches the locket, but the two pieces are now firmly fused back together!
Danny: Whoa...
Autumn: Do you see that? Over there?
Autumn points into the distance, where it looks like two figures are embracing. You squint, but they seem to dissolve when you try to look closer...
Danny: Was that...
Autumn: I think so... it’s over. We did it!
Autumn: Well. THAT was a crazy night, wasn’t it?
Danny: Yeah, Definitely didn’t expect to be dealing with ghosts today.
Autumn: In all seriousness, Danny, thanks for your help. You believed me when I must have sounded crazy... and you ran all over town with me on this mission.
Danny: What are friends for?
Autumn gives you a big hug!
Autumn: Usually I’d try to get you to pose for a commemorative photo, but I think we can safely say that this is one Halloween we’ll never forget.
Danny: Hah. Yeah, there’s not a chance I’d forget THIS night. Not a ghost of a chance, Autumn. Not a ghost of a chance.
