Harvest Festival
Stand-Alone Time-Sensitive Quest.
Requirements
|
Autumn’s headed to the Harvest Festival at her uncle’s farm this year! If you haven’t gone before, you should check it out! There’ll be cider making, pony rides, and even a barn dance! Don’t miss out!
Requirements
Payton: Danny! Can you believe it? We’re going to a real farm with cows and everything! I’m so glad you’re coming with us to the Harvest Festival!
Danny: I can see you’re already dressed for it...
Payton: You’ve got to look the part! And getting dressed up is the least we can do. After all, Autumn was so sweet to invite us to her uncle’s farm.
Danny: I’m surprised you wanted to go. You’re not exactly the outdoorsy type.
Payton: Well, as it turns out, PONY RIDES!!!
Danny: I guess you can’t argue with that.
Autumn: Hey, guys! Ready to go? My uncle offered to give everyone a ride down to the farm in his truck.
Danny: Cool! I’m ready. Thanks for inviting us!
Autumn: Of course! I’m really glad you guys could come... especially since my dad isn’t coming... We used to go to this Harvest Festival together every year... but ever since my mom passed away, my dad never makes time to go.
Danny: Aw, sorry to hear that...
Autumn: It’s okay. I’ve got you guys! Anyway, come on... it’s time to go! Who else do you want to bring along?
Requirements
Autumn hops down from the truck you arrived in and waves at a beautiful farm adjacent to an apple orchard. Nearby are animal pens and a bright, red barn! Rows of corn line the road.
Autumn: We’re here! What do you guys think?
Berry: Wow, this is very rustic. I didn’t know dirt roads were actually a thing.
Alexandra: Yeah, is this some kind of place where we’re going to have to kill our dinner before we eat it?
Autumn: Relax... my uncle is prepping the preserves and pies for the food fair. There’s going to be plenty to eat. And you won’t even have to hunt it!
Berry: ...food fair?
Autumn: Yep! It’s a huge contest everyone participates in. My mom and I always used to make fresh apple cider for the contest... eight years back, we even got a blue ribbon!
Danny: Sounds fun! So are we entering?
Autumn: Of course! But first... we need apples.
Your group assembles at the edge of the orchard beside some wicker baskets.
Autumn: Okay, everyone, grab a basket and fill it up with apples, the redder and juicier the better...
Payton: This seems suspiciously like work. Do we have to fill up all of these baskets?
Julian: Aw, come on, Prep. We got this!
Time - 4 hours
Your group disperses into the orchard, picking the ripest and juiciest apples you can find...
Berry: Crunch... crunch... mmm... this apple is delicious!
Alexandra: Hey, no eating those yet!
Berry: ...I was hungry!
Autumn: Heh. You can taste a few! We’ve definitely picked more than enough apples by now!
Autumn inspects all the baskets full of apples.
Autumn: These look red and delicious and... well, that probably explains the name. And now for the next step! Come on, everyone! We’re going to make fresh-squeezed apple cider!
Requirements
Autumn leads everyone into the barn. On one side is a large iron apple press with a hopper, grinder, and spigot.
Berry: Whoa... that thing looks fierce!
On the other side of the barn is a rack filled with spice jars.
Payton: Squee! And look at all that allspice... like, if you have that, you don’t even need any other spices.
Autumn: ...that’s not exactly accurate.
Autumn points to the hopper.
Autumn: The best part about making your own apple cider is that you can decide exactly what you want in it! Pick whatever you want!
Alexandra: ...you sure?
Time - 6 hours
While Autumn readies the apple press, you rummage through the rack of spices.
Berry: It looks like we have room for a few different ingredients.
Alexandra: ...but WHICH ingredients?
You examine the top rack of the spices and select sugar.
Danny: A good recipe always starts with something sweet...
Payton: Definitely!
Next, you pick out cinnamon.
Danny: Plus a little cinnamon... just like a homemade apple pie!
Autumn: That sounds delicious!
Danny: We’re all ready!
You dump your selected ingredients into the hopper. Julian turns the wheel on the apple press, and thick, golden juice flows out.
Autumn pours cups of apple cider and hands them to everyone!
Autumn: Cheers!
Everyone takes a sip...
Autumn: Mmm... sweet and cinammony...
Payton: It tastes just like an apple fritter... but you can drink it through a straw! You were right, Autumn... that was delicious! And amazing!
Berry: ...Deliciously amazing!
Autumn: Well, let’s hope the judges like it! In the meantime, the day’s just getting started! There’s way more amazing stuff to do. How would you guys like to go pet some of our barn animals?
Payton: YES!!!
Requirements
Autumn leads you out the far end of the barn and over to a small pen where the barnyard animals are idling.
Payton: Squeeee! Cute baby piggies! Cute baby sheepies! Baby babies!
Julian: I think you broke Payton.
Autumn: Go on, you guys can pet them if you want... Well, except Goatface over there. He’s kind of old and crotchety.
Danny: Aww, he probably just wants some attention.
Goatface bites a nail out of the fencepost and spits it in your direction.
Danny: ...or not.
Autumn: Go on, make your choice.
Danny: A lamb.
Autumn: Aww... lambs are pretty soft and warm and cuddly...
Payton: Like the cutest little blanket with hooves!
Autumn opens the gate and allows you and Payton into the pen with the baby lambs.
Time - 8 hours
After only a short while in the pen, you have several lambs affectionately nuzzling against your legs. Another is fast asleep in your lap.
Danny: Aww, these little guys are so darling!
Payton: Cute overload!
Danny: I know, right?
Payton: No, I mean... yes! I mean, I grabbed some selfies of us with the lambs and uploaded them. Now we’re the top image on cuteoverload.com!
After you’re done playing with the lambs, Autumn closes the gate and leads everyone over to the stables.
Autumn: I’m pretty confident Payton will enjoy the next stop on our farm tour.
Payton: OMG... OMG... PONIES!
Requirements
Your group rushes into the barn to survey the horses.
Payton: Ponies! Ponies! And whoa, that’s a really big pony!
Autumn: They’re not all ponies, Payton. That’s an Appaloosa, and we’ve also got Morgans, and an Arabian.
Alexandra: Look, this one’s eating an apple slice right out of my palm!
Autumn pulls a leather saddle off the rack and hands it to you.
Autumn: Here you go, Danny. This one’s for you. Put this saddle on whichever horse you’d like to ride. They’re all friendly.
You survey the stables and settle on a stately black stallion. You stretch to place your saddle on the black stallion, and he nods at you with regal authority.
Danny: Thank you, your highness.
Autumn: Everybody find their horse?
Alexandra: Yep!
Payton: SQUEEEEEEE!
Autumn: All right then. Let’s hit the trail. YAHHH!
Time - 10 hours
Your group exits the stables on horseback and continues on a dirt path that loops around the farmhouse. Rows of apple trees stretch as far as the eye can see.
Danny: Look at all that!
Julian: Your uncle owns all this land?
Autumn: Yep. And believe it or not, there used to be even more!
Alexandra: ...seriously?
Autumn: Yup, when I was little, my dad used to take me fishing at the pond near the old grain silo. But I haven’t been there in years. My uncle said the pond’s dried up. It’s weird... I guess I kind of thought this place would never change... that I could come back here with my dad sometime, and it would be like we never left...
Danny: You really wish your dad had come, huh?
Autumn: He’s always so busy. I guess I thought that being here with me might remind him of what we used to have. But it’s okay... we’ll have a good time at the festival tonight, and then I’ll show him the pictures. Maybe that’ll be enough to--
The horses buck as a rattlesnake slithers across the path!
Payton: AHH! AHHH! Settle down, cute pony!
Danny: Whoa!
You hang on tight as your pony bolts off into the apple orchard!
Danny: WHOA! WHOA!
You pull on the reins... and your horse slows down to a gentle lope.
Payton: Oh wow... that was crazy...
Autumn: Good job, Danny! It isn’t easy to calm a spooked horse. You’re a natural!
Danny: Aww, shucks...
As a group, you ride back to the farm...
Back at the Harvest Festival...
Julian: Hey! Something smells delicious...
Autumn: That’s the food fair! They’re all set up... ready to eat?
Requirements
You, Autumn, Payton, and Julian head over to the heart of the Harvest Festival. Brightly-colored balloons, fall-themed centerpieces, and checkered tablecloths decorate the picnic area.
Autumn: Over here’s the food fair. In a little bit, the judges will award different prizes to the best entries. In the meantime, we get to sample all of the food!
Autumn leads all of you to the table full of delicious foods... you each pule a plate high with fresh apple pie, corn on the cob, baked potatoes, and all of the other foods.
Danny: Mmm! Peach preserves... apricot preserves... strawberry jam... all so good.
Payton: And this apple pie is so sweet! The apples are ah-maz-ing!
Autumn: That’s what it tastes like when you use apples fresh from the orchard.
Payton: This whole wilderness thing is kind of cool...
Autumn: Heh. And... over there’s where our cider’s waiting to be judged!
Payton: I hope we win! I love ribbons...
Autumn: Here come the judges!
Time - 12 hours
Autumn: Wait a second... I think that judge just left a ribbon by our cider!
Everyone rushes to look at the bright blue ribbon in front of your entry.
Autumn: ‘Best in Show’! We did it! We did it! We won! Mom would be proud.
Payton: Yes! We’re winners!
Julian: Awesome. High-five, Autumn.
Autumn: Heh! Yeah!
Danny: That was fun... and delicious.
Autumn: The fun’s just beginning! I hope you guys are ready for an authentic barn dance!
Payton: What makes it authentic?
Autumn: Well, to start, it’s in a barn...
Payton: Oooh!
Autumn: The animals won’t be in there, Payton.
Payton: Oooh.
Autumn: But, there will be live music, hay bales, snacks, and treats!
Danny: Lead the way!
Requirements
You approach a big, red barn that is lit brightly from within by candles. You ehar the twangy sounds of a country band coming from inside.
Autumn: This is it! The barn dance. My uncle’s over there... my grandpa’s sitting on the side next to grandma... and next to them is... is... Oh!
Danny: Wait a sec... is that...
Julian: Autumn’s dad?
Time - 8 hours
Autumn: Um, I’ll be right back...
Autumn goes over to her father... the two of them talk...
Payton: I thought Autumn’s dad wasn’t coming. Isn’t she always saying how he’s never around?
Julian: He’s not. Usually he doesn’t even remember her birthday...
Danny: But I think Autumn wishes that he were around more... maybe it’s a good sign that he’s here?
You see Autumn’s eyes fill with tears... as she throws her arms around her dad in a huge hug!
Danny: Aww...
The band’s lead singer calls out, ‘Everyone, we’re about to start the official Father-Daughter dance, by special request!’ A sweet song begins playing, and Autumn and her dad dance together!
Afterwards, Autumn comes running back.
Julian: Everything okay?
Autumn: More than okay. I know my dad’s not always around, but he’s really trying today! He cancelled his meeting, and he’s even going to go talk to my grandpa now! They haven’t talked in years! I know it’s just one step, but it really means a lot to me.
Danny: Aw, it’s good to see you so happy, Autumn!
As you’re talking, the band’s lead singer clears her throat and calls out, ‘Everyone to the dance floor! Pick your sweetheart and partner up!’
Payton: Oooh, you heard the lady! The next dance is about to start! Quick, everyone! Find a partner!
Requirements
Danny: Berry, may I have this dance?
Berry: Of course!
You take Berry’s hand and step onto the dance floor. All around you, the barn is lit by soft candle light. Other couples dance together.
Berry: Have you ever been to a barn dance before?
Danny: No... I’m more of an ‘indoorsy’ type. Wild animals, isolated back-roads, and spotty internet? This place seems like a horror movie waiting to happen...
Berry: Heh. Don’t worry, I’ll protect you.
Danny: I’m not saying we’re about to be attacked by monsters... I’m just saying that if we were, this is the place it would happen.
Berry: Heh. Hopefully they can wait until after the dance... the band is about to start playing! Get ready... this isn’t going to be the kind of music you’re used to!
The band plays the opening few notes, and the lead singer clears her throat...
Time - 16 hours
Berry: This is going to be fun. I’m so glad we’re here together.
Danny: Me too. Ready for this?
Berry: Ready as I’ll ever be!
The band begins to play! You and Berry come together as the dance begins! The lead singer calls out, ‘Swing your partner ‘round and ‘round!’ You swing Berry around, and Berry swings you around!
Berry: We did it!
The lead singer calls out, ‘Turn your partner with your right hand ‘round!’ You turn Berry with your right hand!
Berry: Nice! This is fun! Now it’s my turn to lead!
The lead singer calls out, ‘Circle left and spin ‘em slow!’ You circle left and let Berry spin you slow!
Berry: Perfect! We did it!
The song ends, and Berry turns to you...
Berry: Danny, thanks for a wonderful night.
Berry kisses you!
Danny: It was a perfect night.
As the night draws to a close, you and your friends meet up outside the barn.
Payton: Who knew you could have so much fun without electricity?
Autumn: We HAVE electricity, Payton. The candles are for atmosphere.
Payton: Hee hee! I know, just teasing. Thank you for inviting us out here. I know how much this place means to you, and it’s awesome you shared it with us.
Julian: Yeah, Autumn. This means a lot.
Autumn: Well, y’know, you guys are my best friends! Of course I wanted you to be here.
