Danny: Hey, Hsin. What are you writing?
Hsin: Oh, this? This is just a journal of stylized musings...
Danny: Can I see?
Hsin: Well, uh... if you really want to...
Danny: ‘Smiles of strangers take wing and swarm... they blot the sky to shades of winter’... Wow, this poetry is really deep!
Hsin: You think so?
Danny: Yeah! It does seem sad though...
Hsin: I guess that’s why I hesitate to show it to people. Emo kids are known for expressing their emotions with art and music... for wearing their hearts on their sleeves... But even though I love to write, it’s hard to find people who want to listen to what I have to say. I even tried to start a Poetry Club, but so far, no one has signed up. I don’t think anyone here can relate to me.
Danny: I can definitely relate to feeling down sometimes. And I’m sure others can, too! You’ll see!
Hsin: I just feel out of place at this school. Everyone seems so picture-perfect and happy! How could I relate to anyone? It’s like no one’s gone through issues the way I have.
Danny: I don’t think that’s true...
Hsin: Oh really? Is there anyone here who has known the pain of a broken dream? Who has felt the deepest yearning for a love long lost?
Danny: Actually... yeah.
Requirements
Hsin: You were right, Danny! There ARE people going through rough times at this school. I just shared a poem with them about the fleetingness of love, and they totally knew where I was coming from. I feel little bit better now.
Danny: Are you saying... you’re happy that people are sad?
Hsin: Of course not! It’s just nice to know that you’re not alone in the abysmal mire of unrelenting existence, know what I mean?
Danny: You lost me at ‘abysmal mire’, but I think I got the idea!
Danny: See? If you shared your poetry, I’m sure people would relate! You just need to surround yourself with like-minded people.
Hsin: Well... there IS a huge art and music festival coming up. Hundreds of people will be pouring their feelings out for the world to see. We should go! It’s called the ‘Bleeding Heart Festival’!
Danny: Sounds awesome! That’s the most emo name I’ve ever heard... and I mean that in a good way!
Hsin: I know, right?
Danny: I can’t wait to go!
Hsin: Now we just need to buy tickets!
Requirements
Danny: I’ve got the tickets for the Bleeding Heart Festival!
Hsin: Awesome! For emo kids, BHF is like the happiest AND saddest place on earth!
Danny: And... that’s a good thing, right?
Hsin: The best!
Hsin: You all set to go?
Danny: I was, but now I’m wondering... Are you sure I’m ‘emo’ enough for this festival?
Hsin: Of course! It’s not a competition. Anyone can be ‘emo’. It’s all about honestly expressing yourself.
Danny: I think I can manage that.
Hsin: Now all we need is someone to give us a ride to the festival! Have anyone in mind?
Requirements
Berry’s car pulls up to the curb in front of you.
Berry: Hop in, you two! We’ve got a long drive to the festival.
Hsin: Awesome! This gives Danny time for a crash course in emo music!
Danny: A crash course?
Hsin: Yup! I’ve made a playlist of all my favorite emo bands! ‘Audio Heartbreak’, ‘Roses for Dahlia’, ‘My Last December’, ‘Please Amelia Don’t Leave Me’...
Berry: Are those the names of bands or race horses?
Danny: They sound... intense.
Hsin: I know, right? I can’t wait!
Time - 6 hours
Berry: ‘And kiss the shattered autumn dawn goodbyyyyeee!!!’
Danny: I’ve gone on a lot of road trips, but I don’t think I’ve ever sung my heart out like that!
Hsin: Well, save your voice... because we’re here! The Bleeding Heart Festival!
Berry: I’ll meet you guys in the parking lot after the festival. I’m gonna go soak in the emo!
You and Hsin wave to Berry and enter the bustling fairgrounds to explore...
Danny: Whoa, check out those intense art exhibits! Everything looks broken or bleeding or fading away...
Hsin: Such is life.
Danny: Mind. Blown.
Hsin: And look! You can see the film screening going on in that exhibition hall!
Danny: Indie songwriter soundtrack? Clever, poignant dialogue? Angsty teen actors with their hands in their pockets? Looks emo to me!
Hsin: You haven’t even seen the concert stage yet!
Danny: Whoa! Is that ‘Sayonara and the NeverReturns’ performing? I thought that band broke up!
Hsin: Yeah! Despite their name, they got back together!
Danny: That’s both ironic and awesome! BHF is great!
Danny: Hey, look! They’re holding a poetry contest over there on the pavilion stage!
Hsin: Yeah, it’s one of my favorite parts of the festival! The contestants go all out, with music and performance pieces to accompany their poetry readings!
On stage, a poet sobs openly in his knees. Behind him, a broken heart made of paper mache holds a thousand burning sparklers!
Hsin: Not only are their performances spectacular... they convey pain that’s genuine and raw!
Danny: You should enter! You’ve written some really brilliant poetry!
Hsin: They’re really more like stylized musings...
Danny: Still... you should give it a shot! If your writing was meant to express yourself, you should share ti with the world!
Hsin: Look, I appreciate the support, but I just don’t stand a chance! Those other poets... they’re going through really deep stuff. I’m just a poser in comparison. You don’t know what it’s like. People already joke that ‘emo’ kids are whiny and fake. Why get up on stage and invite people to look down on me and ridicule my issues?
Danny: Well, if there’s anywhere you should feel safe to express yourself, it’s here! You just need to realize your potential!
Requirements
Danny: Ready to do this? Just remember... who cares what other people think of your issues? Like you told me... being ‘emo’ isn’t about competition, or seeing who’s been through the most... It’s about expressing yourself honestly!
Hsin: I said that? ...I DID say that, didn’t I?
Danny: Yeah. You’ve said some other really deep stuff, too. And now it’s time to share it!
Hsin: All right. If I’m going to compete with the other acts, I’m going to need some backup. Would you recite poetry alongside me on stage?
Danny: Of course!
Hsin: Awesome! On top of that, I’ll need a few creative friends to really set our poetry presentation apart!
Requirements
Hsin: All right, as Danny and I recite poetry, I was thinking Kate could perform a soulful interpretive dance on stage!
Kate: I’ll literally be poetry in motion!
Hsin: Then Madison will paint on a backdrop, live in front of the audience!
Madison: It’s dynamic! Organic! In-the-moment! I love it!
Nalo: No offense, but what am I doing here? I’m not really an artsy type.
Hsin: You’re here because I wanted an original twist. I needed someone with unique ideas, who’s not afraid to go against the grain!
Nalo: Well, when you put it that way, I DID have a few thoughts... Everyone on the emo scene is doing ‘sad’ nowadays. You should run counterculture. Add HAPPINESS to the mix.
Danny: A mix of sadness and happiness?
Hsin: The full range of human experience... the emotional roller coaster with all its crests and depths... I love it! In fact, I hate that I love it so much! Let’s rehearse!
Time - 16 hours
As the performance starts, you and Hsin stand on opposite sides of the stage, with Kate in between you. Behind you, Madison stands at a blank white backdrop, paints in hand!
Hsin: I sway on the edge of summer’s demise... Rain falls like cold needles from grey August skies...
Kate’s hands swoop gracefully, imitating falling rain, while Madison flecks blue and grey paint onto the canvas...
Hsin: And the droplets of soul that streak down from her eyes...
Danny: Um... Sink like sunsets eternal, gone never to rise!
Kate sinks sadly into a ball on the floor, as Madison blots out a yellow sun with swaths of dark purple! The crowd watches with silent, tearful eyes!
Hsin: But fall comes with a whisper, the red trees her crown... The raindrops her footsteps, the ivy her gown...
Kate stretches and sways like a tree, as Madison draws crimson branches sprouting across the canvas...
Hsin: The leaves of her hair turn a rich, brittle brown...
Danny: Hmm... And crumble to clothe the bare streets of the town!
Kate flips and lands gracefully onto the floor, as Madison dots the backdrop with intricate auburn leaves! The crowd oohs and aahs in wonder...
Hsin: But the warmth from within! A blossoming starts... Of joy and exuberance! Of radiant art!
Madison bounds across the stage with glee, as Kate spreads stripes the colors of dawn along the canvas...
Hsin: And the spark I once lost pierces deep through my heart...
Danny: Uh... Like a spear of sunlight that bids clouds to part!
Kate leaps triumphantly into the air, as Madison drags a brilliant golden streak across the entire painting! The crowd gasps, their eyes alight... ...And all at once, the audience erupts into joyous applause!
Hsin: Thank you! Thank you!
Danny: They loved it!
All of you join hands and take a bow!
Some time later, Hsin approaches you on the fairgrounds.
Hsin: Thanks for all your help, Danny.
Danny: No problem! I tried my best to match your artistic tone!
Hsin: You nailed it!
Danny: When do you hear who won the poetry contest?
Hsin: That’s actually what I wanted to talk to you about... The results are in! I WON!
Danny: Awesome! Congratulations!
Hsin: I don’t think I’ve ever smiled this wide before! My mouth almost hurts! And the best part is I’ve met some new friends to share my writing with. My fellow performers have all decided to come to my Poetry Club meeting next week!
Danny: That’s awesome! I knew you’d find someone to relate to!
Hsin: I couldn’t have done it without you, Danny. You’ve been like the North Star, guiding always the hearts of mariners to their destinies...
Danny: Hey, any time! Call me if you ever need a poetry partner.
Hsin: Or someone to belt out indie rock ballads with!
Danny: Definitely. So do you still feel like life is ‘an abysmal mire of unrelenting existence’?
Hsin: Eh, it has its ups and down. But I’ve got my friends. That makes it worth the ride.
