Priya: I like your sound!
Danny: My sound?
Priya: Yeah, when you’re walking. You’ve got a real rhythm to your step. Could I record you? I’m an aspiring DJ, so I try to have as many sounds recorded as possible.
Danny: Uh... sure. ‘Cause that’s not weird or anything.
Priya: Heh. I know, I know. Think of it this way... when I become famous, people will be dancing to YOUR sound!
After a minute or two of Priya recording your walk...
Priya: Perfect!
Danny: So... why do you record sounds?
Priya: Well, most of the DJ’ing I’ve done has been song mixing, you know, blending parts of existing songs together. But I also collect sounds from my surroundings to try and make my own songs from scratch!
Danny: Cool. Can I hear some of your work?
Priya: Sure! I can play some of my mixes for you in the lab at my hangout! Come with me!
Requirements
You and Priya arrive at Priya’s set up, an impressive conglomeration of switches, levers, and buttons all glowing a cool, luminescent blue.
Danny: What do you call this thing?
Priya: This? This is a controller. It lets me do everything... cross-fading, adding FX, you name it.
Danny: Cool.
Priya: Anyway, let me just queue up one of my mixes on my laptop and we can check it out!
Time - 4 hours
You listen for a while to Priya’s mix...
Danny: It sounds so good! Every transition is seamless! It really feels like it’s all one song!
Priya: I’m glad you like it! Not everyone appreciates fluid transitions.
Danny: Could I hear one of your originals?
Priya: Uh... maybe later...
Danny: Is it something I said?
Priya: No, it’s just, well... let’s just say I’m already liking this school way better than my last one...
Danny: Oh no, what was wrong with your old school?
Priya: All the students there just wanted to hear the top 40 hits! I felt like I was one of those obnoxious DJs on a pop music station...
Danny: Well, pop music is really fun!
Priya: Yeah, I understand that. It’s fun to dance to and sing along with.
Danny: But not to play as a DJ?
Priya: Imagine hearing the same song 1,000 times a day!
Danny: I can see how that could get old FAST...
Priya: Once, at this party, I tried to play a song that I’d MADE, not just a mix of songs... and I got booed off the stage... I try to make music from sounds that are close to me, so it’s almost like my music IS me. When the students at my old school rejected my song, it kinda felt like they were rejecting me too.
Danny: That must have felt awful...
Priya: That’s why I came here. I heard this school was different, that students actually care about each other here.
Danny: We try.
Danny: Is there anything I can do to help you out?
Priya: Well, I wouldn’t want to impose or anything, but I kind of want to be... ...the BEST DJ ever! I want to stand on a stage with a huge set of top-of-the-line turntables and just feel the electricity from the crowd as they anticipate the drop and then... boom! Everybody gets amped up! I want to be mentioned in the same conversations as Skrillex, Daft Punk, and DeadMau5!
Danny: Whoa! You dream big. I don’t think I can promise you all that...
Priya: Oh, I totally wouldn’t expect that. Like you said, it’s a big dream... but big dreams start small! What I really want is a chance to debut my next song!
Danny: Your... next song?
Priya: Inspired by you, Danny! Well, your walk at least! If I could get samples showcasing the students of this school, I think I could make an amazing song! But I don’t really know anyone...
Danny: Luckily, I do! I’ll totally help you out!
Priya: Really?
Danny: Really. We’ll get you on a stage with some top-notch equipment and a big crowd! Whether you end up in the same conversations as, uh... those famous DJs... well, that’ll be up to you.
Priya: Sweet! Thanks, Danny! What do we have to do first?
Danny: First, we need to find an event where you can debut you song!
Priya: Who’s in charge of events here?
Danny: Follow me!
Requirements
You and Priya find Maddie in the student office of the Admissions Building.
Maddie: How can I help you?
Priya: I want to DJ an event!
Maddie: Oh, great! We’ve been needing some fresh sounds at this school!
Maddie scrolls through an online calendar...
Maddie: What great timing! There’s a dance coming up next week!
Priya: Next week?! That’s so soon!
Danny: That’s perfect!
Maddie: I can even add your name to these flyers we’re putting up today! What name should I put down?
Priya: Uhhhhh... one second! Emergency brainstorm!
Priya pulls you aside.
Danny: What’s up? You look nervous all of a sudden.
Priya: I’m freaking out! Whatever name goes on that flyer, THAT’s the name I’m going to be remembered as! It has to be a name that sounds really cool! Like... Tiesto or Kaskade or David Guetta. Maybe not that last one...
Danny: Okay, so, do you have any ideas?
Priya: I’ve narrowed it down to my top four, but I can’t decide! Do you think you could pick my name for me?
Danny: Sure.
Priya gives you four names, and you return to Maddie.
Maddie: So, what name should I add to this flyer?
Danny: You should add the name DJ Sonic.
Maddie: Solid. I’m expecting something high-energy from DJ Sonic.
Priya: That’s why I like it!
Maddie: Anyway, just give me some time to get these flyers made and printed out...
Time - 6 hours
You and Priya return to Maddie in the Admissions Building.
Danny: How’d the flyers come out?
Maddie: See for yourself!
Maddie holds up a freshly printed flyer... ...the name ‘DJ Sonic’ is displayed across the bottom, encased in twisting bolts of lightning.
Maddie: I was trying to convey energy... What do you think?
Danny: It looks good to me. Priya? You’re awfully quiet...
Priya: It’s... it’s... the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen!
Outside the Admissions Building...
Danny: What else do you need in order to debut your song? I mean, other than the actually song... which we’ll be getting to soon, I promise.
Priya: Well, if I’m going to do this right, I’ll need better turntables that the ones I’ve been using.
Danny: That should be easy enough...
Requirements
Priya: All right! Now that I’ve got some turntables, I’m ready to go out there and record some sounds for my new song!
Danny: Awesome! Let’s go!
Danny: Just out of curiosity... where should we go? I mean, I’ve never done this before so I’m not really sure what sounds we should be looking for. ...er, listening for.
Priya: We’ll start with the hook, which is kind of like the chorus. Do you know where I could hear some enthusiastic shouting?
Danny: I know just the place!
Requirements
A moment later, you and Priya step into the gym, where the cheerleaders are practicing.
Mai: What’s up, Danny?
Danny: This might sound off, but we were wondering if we could record you guys for a song that Priya is making!
Sebastian: Of course you can! We were just about to work on a new cheer!
You and Priya set up recording equipment as the cheerleaders perform!
Time - 8 hours
Mai: Reeeeeady?! O-kay!
Sebastian: Who’s got spirit? Who’s got cheer?
Mai: Who’s flying higher than the atmosphere?!
Sebastian: We are! We are!
Mai: We’re soaring like a star!
The cheerleaders all cheer, tossing each other into the air!
Danny: How’s the recording, Priya?
Priya: Sounds good! Now I just have to decide which line to use for the hook... What do you think, Danny?
Priya plays the cheer back for you.
Danny: They’re all pretty good, but if I had to choose, I’d pick we’re soaring like a star!
Priya: Why that one?
Danny: It’s really poetic. Who doesn’t want to soar? Who doesn’t want to be a star?
Priya: Yeah, I like that one best too! Good choice, Danny!
Danny: Thanks! I’m just glad I could help the talent!
Priya: Now I just need to clean up this sample at home.
The next day, Priya plays the cheerleader sample for you.
Danny: That sounds great!
Priya: Now we just have to pair it with a beat... something raw and live...
Danny: I think I know what you’re talking about! Come with me!
Requirements
Out on the football field, you and Priya approach a bunch of band members in between songs...
Jessie: Hey, Danny, Priya. Did you come to support us before the big game?
Danny: Actually...
Priya: ...how would you feel about us getting a sample of you guys for my new song?
Jessie: Oh cool!
Jessie turns to the rest of the marching band.
Jessie: Hey, guys, we’re going to be recorded for a song!
Sophia: All right!
Jessie: What’d you have in mind?
Priya: I need a beat!
Jessie: Well, you’ve come to the right place then. Drummers, get in line!
The drummers all form a line, their drums glinting in the sunlight. Priya extends a microphone...
Time - 10 hours
The drummers band their drums in a precise, powerful beat while Priya records them. After...
Danny: That sounded awesome to me. How’d the recording come out?
Priya: Perfect. This is going to complement the cheerleader sample exactly how I envisioned!
Priya plays the drumline sample for you.
Danny: It sounds... good.
Priya: What is it?
Danny: I’m just not understanding how it’s going to go with the cheerleader sample you already have...
Priya: Trust me, a little bit of beatmatching, a little bit of time with the mixer, and they’ll sound amazing together! But before the song is complete, I’ll need some sounds to garnish the song with.
Danny: Garnish?
Priya: Yeah, I need some electronic sounds to sprinkle in, sort of like the seasoning you add at the end of a recipe.
Danny: Well, bon appetit, because I know just the people to see for electronic sounds!
Requirements
A moment later, you and Priya find the L33t Gamers Group in a classroom. In one corner, the nerds are playing around with a robot. It skitters back and forth across the linoleum!
Zayn: Out of the way! Super cool robot coming through!
BIP! BZZZRP! BEEZERRRP! In another corner, the gamers are huddled around a classic arcade game.
Joshua: Yeah! New high score!
BLOOP! BLOOP! DOOOOP!
Danny: Are those sounds good enough, Priya?
Priya: I think so...
Danny: Hey, everyone, do you mind if we record you for a song?
Zayn: Go for it!
Joshua: Yeah, catch my sweet gaming moves in action!
Priya begins recording the sounds of the nerds’ robot and the gamers’ video game...
Time - 7 hours
After a few minutes of recording the L33T Gamers Group...
Danny: Are all these electronic sounds going to work for your song, Priya?
Priya: They are!
Priya: So, do I go with the robotic, buzzier sound? Or the playful, video game sound?
Danny: Why not both?
Priya: Well, I COULD blend them together, but it’ll sound weird. Like a flute and a harmonica.
Danny: Not a combo you hear everyday...
Priya: Exactly. Both are great, but they’re not good together. It all depends on what kind of mood I want to set for my song. What do you think, Danny? Which one would you choose?
Danny: The playful video game sound! Music is supposed to be fun, and video games are fun!
Priya: No argument there! Now I just need to combine all the sounds we’ve collected so my song can be ready for the dance!
Danny: So... um... about that...
Priya: You’re still doubting how all the sounds are gonna come together, aren’t you?
Danny: Yeah, but I guess that’s what makes you special... you can hear how to individual sounds are going to blend into a song!
Priya: Yeah, I just hope I’m right!
Danny: Awww, I’m sure you are. I’m really looking forward to the debut of your song!
Priya: Me too!
Requirements
It’s the night of the dance! Priya stands on stage behind a huge set of top-of-the-line turntables. The crowd is pulsing with energy...
Mai: Let’s hear some music!
Jessie: Hit us with a beat!
Joshua: Yeah! Let’s get electric, DJ Sonic!
Priya’s hand is poised over the turntable, ready to play her song... ...she freezes!
Priya: Uh...
You jump on stage, pulling Priya away from the mic.
Danny: What’s wrong, Priya? Why aren’t you playing your song?
Priya: Because! It’s going to be just like it was at my old school! I’ll be booed offstage!
Danny: You might... but at least you’ll have tried. Besides, what’s the alternative? Giving up on your big dream? Never giving yourself a chance to be discovered? Is that really what you want?
Priya: No...
Danny: No! You came to this school because you wanted to be accepted for who you are. This song is who you are.
Priya: But what is the crowd doesn’t like it?
Danny: You’ll never know if you don’t put yourself out there. No one will ever know the real YOU.
Priya: Kinda sappy, Danny... but you’re right! I’ll do it!
Danny: All right!
Priya returns to the microphone.
Priya: Hey, everyone! My name is DJ Sonic... ...and I want to dedicate this to the person who helped me get here, who helped make this moment happen... ...thanks, Danny! This one’s for you!
Without hesitating, Priya presses the play button, and the song starts! Time seems to slow down...
Time - 14 hours
As the new song plays at the dance, Priya watches for the crowd’s reactions... ...at first, there’s nothing but blank stares.
Mai: Wha?
Priya: That’s not good...
...but then, the whole crowd seems to pick up the rhythm of the hook, heads bobbing in unison.
Jessie: Yeah!
Priya: Better...
And when the beat finally drops, hundreds of arms fly into the air!
Joshua: Awesome song!
Mai: You can even hear my voice!
Jessie: And my drumming!
Priya: It’s a dream come true!
You join Priya onstage.
Danny: That was fantastic!
Priya: Thanks, Danny! I never could have done it without you!
Danny: Awww!
Priya: You know, I’ve been thinking about you, Danny.
Danny: Uh... you have?
Priya: Yeah, I’ve been thinking how I took a lot of disjointed noises and brought them together to make this beautiful song... But every day you take a lot of students who don’t belong anywhere and bring them together at this wonderful school! It’s like you’re the DJ of people!
Danny: Now who’s being sappy?
Priya: Heh. You got me there!
Danny: Want to dance?
Priya: Don’t have to ask me twice!
You and Priya dance together, the crowd dancing around you, and all to Priya’s song!
- Have a DJ
Priya: I like your sound!
Danny: My sound?
Priya: Yeah, when you’re walking. You’ve got a real rhythm to your step. Could I record you? I’m an aspiring DJ, so I try to have as many sounds recorded as possible.
