Requirements
As you enter the parking lot, Kelsy sprints by, carrying a freshly-waxed surfboard.
Kelsy: Akaw, dude! Coming through!
Danny: ...whoa, in a rush, Kelsy?
Kelsy: The tide waits for no dude... or lady dude. And besides, today is kinda special. Last day to surf for a way long time... I’d just really hate to miss out, y’know?
Danny: No, not exactly--
Kelsy: DUDE! What am I saying? DUDE! Here we are TALKING, when you should totally come with! We can be all, like, surf buddies!
Danny: Kelsy, you want me to come surfing with you?
Kelsy: Why not? Haven’t you ever surfed before?
Danny: No way, dude!
Kelsy: For serious? Then now’s the best time to learn! You’ll be shredding heavies in Teahupoo before you know it! So... you in?
Danny: I’m in!
Requirements
A short while later, you and Kelsy arrive at a nearly deserted beach with beautiful white sand and crystal blue waves.
Kelsy: Aww... breathe deep, dude. You smell that?
Danny: ...uh, salt water?
Kelsy: Nah, dude. Look where we ARE. It’s the DIVIDE. This’s where earth meets water, where water meets sky. Surfing is the SOURCE.
Kelsy races toward the water.
Kelsy: So what are you waiting for, freshie? Surf is UP!
Time - 6 hours
You paddle out on your board, joining Kelsy behind the wavebreak.
Kelsy: Now, dude, I know you’re new to this, but try to remember... When it comes to waves... ‘You just gotta decide that you want it more than you’re afraid of it.’
Danny: ...that’s it? That’s all I need to know to surf?
Kelsy: Bwah! Not even, dude! It’s just, y’know, like words to live by.
Kelsy spends the next half hour explaining the various steps to catching a wave.
Danny: ...mind blown.
Kelsy: Yo, I know it seems like major mental tonnage, but it breaks down to just two things... POP UP, that’s when you stand on the board... Then LOCK IT IN, that’s when you find your balance on the wave. Just POP and LOCK.
Danny: You mean like... breakdancing?
Kelsy: All you gotta do. You good?
Danny: Actually... yeah!
A set of perfect waves rolls in toward the shore.
Kelsy: All right. This is all you, Danny... GO!
Requirements
You paddle as quickly as you can. As the wave lifts you up and propels you forward, you quickly pop up! You pop to your feet, crouching toward the back of the board!
Kelsy: Good start, dude!
You descend into the trough of the wave and begin to turn, making sure to lock it in! You brush your fingertips into the churning water, keeping low, as you lock into position in the wave.
Kelsy: Flawless, dude!
You zoom along the wave, keeping your balance... and slowing down as you near the shore.
Kelsy: This is it... time for your big finish!
Danny: What?! We didn’t cover this! What am I supposed to do?
Kelsy: Just do whatever!
You stand up straight and give an exaggerated bow.
Danny: G’day, gentlemen!
The motion tosses you forward, and you somersault into the water.
Kelsy: Classy finish, Danny!
You catch waves for the rest of the afternoon, until you’re exhausted.
Kelsy: Look at you, dude. You started today all tabula rasa... And now you’re all tabula rawsome!
Danny: Thanks... I think. But what about you? You’ve been watching me surf all day. Isn’t it time you cut loose?
You paddle back to the shore, while Kelsy hangs back to conquer one last wave...
Kelsy: Here goes everything, dude!
Kelsy paddles, pops up, and slips inside the hollow of a barrel wave.
Danny: Whoa!
Kelsy cross-steps, then launches upward off the lip of the wave. Mid-air, she spins 360 degrees... and then lands safely!
Kelsy: Sweet!
Kelsy rides out the wave and cruises gently to shore.
Danny: That... that was incredible!
Kelsy: Thanks, dude... I’m just stoked I didn’t eat it on that ride! And speaking of eating... I’m totally famished.
Requirements
Kelsy fetches some tacos from a shack along the beach. You each take a couple and start chowing down.
Danny: Mmm... these are really good!
Kelsy: Good? This is better than good. This... all of this... is paradise!
Kelsy sighs wistfully.
Kelsy: Too bad it’s all coming to an end though.
Danny: ...is surfing season over already?
Kelsy: Nahh, there’s a few months left. There’s even a big surfing competition later this week...
Danny: Really? You’re so talented! Why aren’t you entering?
Kelsy: I WANTED to, but... My grades have been slipping. My folks think that I’ve been spending too much time at the beach... So basically I can’t come back here anymore.
Danny: ...you mean, unless you get your grades up?
Kelsy: Dude, dude, don’t EVEN. I spent all last week cramming till my brain broke... And I STILL wiped out on my last quiz.
Danny: ...and you were studying alone?
Kelsy: One rider to a wave.
Danny: Maybe out on the water, but in a classroom... you need a team!
Requirements
You and Kelsy drop by the library.
Kelsy: Whoa... this place is crazy quiet, like the beach gets right before a thunderstorm.
Kimia: A thunderstorm of learning!
Zayn: A BRAINstorm!
Kimia: OMG, I just got that! Zayn, pi five!
The two Nerds slap their hands three times and then bump elbows for the point one four.
Zayn: So Kelsy, are you ready?
Kimia and Zayn each drop a huge stack of books onto the table.
Kelsy: ...yeah, so maybe this was a mistake.
Danny: Give it a chance, Kelsy... ‘You just gotta decide that you want it more than you’re afraid of it.’ Somebody told me those were words to live by.
Kelsy: Okay then... let’s do this!
Time - 12 hours
You and Kelsy take a seat, while Kimia and Zayn stand behind a lectern.
Kimia: The most important part of learning is CONNECTIONS.
Zayn: You just need to connect what you DON’T know to what you DO know. So what exactly DO you know?
Kelsy: Not much... otherwise, I wouldn’t be here.
Danny: That’s not true. You know all about surfing!
Kelsy: I do know surfing. Is that good?
Kimia: Surfing! SURFING?! That’s fantastic! If you know about surfing, then you basically know everything!
Kelsy: ...I do?
Zayn: Sure, surfing is applied physics and math...
Kimia: And you do it in the ocean, and the ocean is connected to the whole world!
Zayn: Let’s try it. What’s the capital of Hawaii?
Kelsy: I... I don’t know...
Kimia: Think. Make connections.
Kelsy: Well, Pipeline is on Oahu. And to get there you’d need to fly to Honolulu... Dude! The capital is Honolulu! DUDE!
A few hours later, the Nerds hold up a series of flashcards.
Kelsy: The earth is 71% water... Life began 3.5 billion years ago... 12 different Doctors, not counting John Hurt.
Danny: ...uh, what does Doctor Who trivia have to do with Kelsy’s quiz?
Kimia: Nothing, we were just proving a point about connections.
Zayn: Plus we totally love that show.
An alarm on Kelsy’s phone rings. She checks the time and takes a deep breath.
Kelsy: Test time, dudes... wish me luck!
Requirements
Danny: Think you’re ready for your quiz?
Kelsy: I sure hope so, but I dunno... I don’t really want to get my hopes up.
Danny: Are you kidding? You’ll do great! You were a regular Jacques Cousteau during the study session!
Kelsy: ...who?
Danny: Y’know, Jacq--
Kelsy: ...wait, I know this! Cousteau sounds like Costa, like in Costa Rica... Which is where I saw a Discovery Channel documentary about Jacques Cousteau, the famous oceanographer dude!
Danny: Yep. He loved the ocean, just like you do. And he tried to share that love with people, just like you do.
Kelsy: That’s pretty cool, Danny. I think I’m ready for that quiz now.
Later that afternoon...
Danny: Kelsy, how’d you do on your test?
Kelsy: Righteous! Righteous! RIGHTEOOOOOUUUUUUS! I got an A, yo! And because I did so awesome... My parents are letting me enter the surf competition today!
Danny: Then we’d better hurry, because it’s about to start!
Requirements
You and Kelsy race back to the beach. Out on the water, pro surfers carve and launch off waves with effortless skill.
Danny: Whoa... there are a lot of good surfers here!
Kelsy: Chyeah, there are... And you’re looking at one of them!
An announcer calls Kelsy’s name. Kelsy grabs her board and charges toward the surf.
Kelsy: Booyakasha!
Kelsy paddles out beyond the break. As a sizable wave starts rolling in, Kelsy strokes into position to catch it.
Kelsy: Here goes everything!
Time - 10 hours
Kelsy pops onto her surfboard, and then locks into the barrel of the wave.
Kelsy: Frontside air reverse... kickflip... cutback... And for my big finish... this is for you, Danny!
Kelsy does a 360 nosegrab and then performs a graceful bow for the judges!
Kelsy: G’day gentlemen!
Kelsy paddles in and joins you on the beach.
Kelsy: They just announced the winner, and guess what... I came in second!
Danny: Seriously? Some of those other surfers were actual pros!
Kelsy: I guess that makes me one too!
Kelsy: Danny, I just got an invitation to the official afterparty... They promised it’ll be all swanky! Like you gotta wear shoes and everything!
Danny: Think you can handle that?
Kelsy: Chyeah, dude, and you totally have to come with... Wouldn’t be a party without my surf buddy! So... you in?
Danny: Pop and lock!
Requirements
You and Kelsy relax together on the patio of a restaurant with a thatched Tiki roof. You clink your pineapple drinks together!
Danny: Congratulations again on winning!
Kelsy: Thanks, dude, but if I’m honest with myself... This trophy really belongs to you! I borrowed the cool final trick you showed me... And without you, I wouldn’t even have been able to compete.

Kelsy nods sagely and points out to the sun setting over the crashing waves.
Kelsy: ‘The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever’...
Danny: ...so that’s a ‘no’ then?
Kelsy: Are you kidding me, dude? I’m all about studying now!
Danny: But you just said--
Kelsy: That QUOTE was from Jacques Cousteau! See, I’ve been doing some more reading since our cram session. And if keeping my grades up means I can do awesome stuff like him... Then there’s room for surfing AND studying in my life!
Danny: Sounds like words to live by.
Kelsy: Booyakasha!
