Part 1
Payton: Hey everyone, I’ve got something to say!
Everyone is gathered in the quad, arguing and shouting about the rumors on My School Secrets. Suddenly, Payton interrupts!
Payton: Listen up!
Silence falls as everyone turns to look at Payton.
Payton: Now, I know that all of you are here because of the blog. And I take partial responsibility for that. We started My School Story as a way to bring this school together, to get to know all the new students. But this confessional page has torn us apart! Someone wrote something just… just awful about me, and this is how I feel about it!
Time - 10 hours
Payton: A-hem. Now, I wrote a blog post in response to this terrible rumor, and I’m going to read part of it to you now.
Payton raises a piece of paper and begins reading from it.
Payton: When I first saw that post, I was sick. Like, literally queasy. I couldn’t believe that someone would think that about me, let alone post it where anyone can see it. And I was mad. So, so furious! I wanted to scream and shout and throw a peppermint latte in the rumor-starter’s face!
Koh: Ha! Nice one, Payton!
Payton: Thanks, Koh. But since that wasn’t an option, because I didn’t recognize the username, I really wanted to write something mean in response. But then I got to thinking… it doesn’t matter who wrote that rumor about me. It was mean, and it hurt my feelings, but at the end of the day, writing something even more hurtful in response wouldn’t fix anything. Our mothers were right when they said ‘if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.’ And so, I decided to not say anything at all. Retaliation doesn’t fix anything. Being the bigger person and thinking before you speak is the answer! Thank you.
Payton takes a bow, and everyone bursts into applause!
Rewards
You, Koh, and Mia make your way over to Payton.
Danny: Payton! That speech was so inspiring!
Payton: Thanks, Danny.
Mia: We’re sorry we couldn’t find the person behind that rumor, Payton.
Payton: It’s okay, Mia. There are more important things than--
Nishan: Guys!
Nishan pushes his way through the crowd to join your group.
Nishan: Have you seen Payton’s blog post? People are commenting on it like crazy!
Part 3
Nishan: A comment war is brewing!
Nishan shows you Payton’s blog post on his phone.
Nishan: Looks like some of these people didn’t really get your message, Payton…
Payton: ‘Payton’s a sweet girl, but she’s being too nice. We can’t let the rumor-starter get away! We have to find the coward!’
Koh: ‘No, we should respect her wishes and just be nice to each other for a change.’
Mia: ‘Looks like you’re a coward, too, Fart-face.’
Danny: This is getting out of control fast!
Time - 14 hours
Danny: These comments are being posted faster than we can even read them!
Koh: This isn’t the fun kind of chaos! We have to stop this… for Payton!
Payton: Look! Isn’t that… Julian’s username? He’s the one writing the comments! Why is he writing mean things?
Danny: Well… it looks like he’s just trying to defend you. Let’s find him and get the whole story.
Koh: Another opportunity for a little bad cop, bad cop!
Rewards
Mia: Time to have a little chat with Julian about his commenting habits.
Danny: We shouldn’t jump to conclusions…
Mia: I just said we should talk to him, Danny.
Koh: Yeah, let’s go… talk.
Nishan: Uh, I think I’ll sit this one out!
Part 3
Payton: I wish Julian wouldn’t post mean comments…
You, Payton, Mia, and Koh head over to the Jock Hangout to find Julian. Koh bursts through the door!
Koh: Hands up!
Julian: Wha--
Julian is at his computer, about to post another comment on the blog.
Koh: Don’t push that button!
Mia: Or you’ll have to deal with us!
Time - 12 hours
Julian: What’s going on? What’s are you guys doing here? Payton, are you okay? I saw that rumor posted about you. It’s so messed up! I can’t believe you--
Koh: Hey! We ask the questions here!
Mia: What are you typing?
Julian: What? Uh… I was, uh--
Koh: Tell us!
Julian: I’m trying!
Payton: Mia, Koh, I think I’ve got it from here.
Mia: …are you sure?
Payton nods, and Koh and Mia take a step back.
Koh: And that, Danny, is how you do bad cop, bad cop.
Danny: That was, um, awesome?
Payton: Julian, we’ve seen some of the stuff that you’ve been posting on the blog and…
Julian: And what? You didn’t like it?
Payton: Well, it’s like you didn’t understand what I was writing about at all.
Payton points at Julian’s computer screen.
Payton: Look at what you’re about to say, Julian.
Julian: What’s wrong with it?
Danny: ‘You’re a loser, and you shouldn’t even be on this blog if you don’t know what you’re talking about.’ Julian!
Payton: Are you sure you want to post that?
Julian: …yes?
Payton: …
Julian: …no?
Payton: It’s up to you, but you should really think about what you write.
Danny: Once you post something online, it basically never goes away.
Mia: And is this really how you want to spend your day? Trading insults with anonymous commenters?
Julian: Well… now that I think about it… I guess I don’t really want to post that comment. I was just caught up in the moment.
Julian deletes his comment.
Rewards
Julian: I’m sorry, Payton. I should’ve paid attention to what you wrote. It’s just hard knowing that whoever wrote that rumor will get away with it.
Payton: It’s okay, really. I appreciate you coming to my defense, but writing mean comments will only contribute to the hurtful cycle.
Danny: That’s it! I’ve got an idea! But I’ll need some help with it…
Part 4
Danny: I know how to stop these mean comments!
Danny: Most of these rumors and mean comments are just our friends posting thoughtlessly, right?
Payton: Yeah… I mean, I assume so.
Mia: I’m sure most of the posters aren’t that mean all the time.
Danny: Exactly. What if we had a way to ask people if they really wanted to post a mean comment? Like what Payton just did to Julian.
Koh: It’s not like we can stand over everyone’s shoulders and monitor them.
Danny: But I bet we could ask Nishan and Sakura to create a program that could do just that!
Time - 13 hours
The next morning, you head over to the Nerd Hangout to find Nishan, Sakura, and Koh clustered around a computer.
Danny: So, how’s it going in here?
Nishan: Great! Sakura and I stayed up all night coding a program that uses a keyword search on blog posts.
Sakura: If it finds something mean, a message will pop up and ask you to think before you type!
Danny: That sounds perfect! So, Koh, what’re you doing here?
Koh: Just helping out.
Sakura: We’re inputting the keywords now, and Koh’s pretty much a walking dictionary of insults.
Nishan: She knows words man was never meant to say…
Koh: Oh, don’t forget ‘chicken breath’! That one really gets ‘em.
Nishan adds ‘chicken breath’ to the list of keywords and uploads the program.
Nishan: And… done! Go ahead, Danny. Try to post a mean comment on the blog.
Danny: Hmmm… You’re a no-life wannabe who smells like stale corn chips!
Nishan: Whoa, harsh.
Sakura: And oddly… specific.
Koh: I’ve taught you well, Danny.
Danny: I didn’t actually mean it!
As you hit ‘enter,’ a pop-up appears. ‘It looks like you’re about to say something that could be hurtful. Take a moment to think about what you’re posting… is that really what you want to say?’
Danny: It worked! This is exactly what we needed! I think it’ll really cut down on the number of mean comments on the blog.
Koh: I guess we’ll find out soon enough…
Rewards
A few days later, you run into Nishan and Sakura in the quad.
Danny: Hey, Nishan, Sakura, how’s the blog going?
Nishan: My preliminary findings suggest that the program is doing fairly well so far, but I’m still trying to collect more data.
Sakura: Danny, do you know anyone who would be willing to come in for an interview?
Danny: Sure! I know just who to ask.
Part 5
Nishan: We need to collect the data to see if this program worked!
You, Sakura, and Nishan meet Alyssa, Hsin, and Cira at the Nerd Hangout to interview them.
Nishan: So, all of you have encountered the new pop-up that appears when you try to post a mean comment on the blog, correct?
Cira: Sure have.
Hsin: Every time.
Sakura: What do you think? Did the pop-up stop you from posting mean things?
Alyssa: Well…
Time - 16 hours
Alyssa: There was this blog post about the ‘hottest new club in town,’ but like, obviously Luxe Lounge is way better than The Pulse. I don’t know what the OP was thinking! I was going to set him straights, but then the pop-up asked me if I was sure… and I wasn’t! I ended up deleting my comment.
Danny: That’s great, Alyssa!
Cira: The pop-up also stopped me from commenting something… uh, rude, to a post about ‘real country’ BBQ. And now that I think about it, I’m glad I didn’t write that reply!
Nishan: That’s exactly what it’s designed to do!
Sakura: I think we can call that a success!
Hsin: Sometimes I use the blog to vent my feelings, but when I’m feeling extra moody, my comments tend to be extra… well, moody. I’m glad the pop-up gave me a chance to rethink how I word my posts.
Nishan: Based on my research, the number of mean comments has dropped dramatically since we added the pop-up, and continues to drop every day!
Danny: It sounds like it’s working exactly as planned!
Rewards
You, Nishan, and Sakura find the rest of your friends to give them the good news.
Julian: Mean comments have really dropped that much? That’s awesome!
Koh: Nice job, Nerdboy.
Nishan: You’re complimenting me?
Koh: Yeah, of course. I saw the damage that can be done with anonymous usernames. Besides, a well-pointed insult is much better face-to-face. Then you can see the reaction shot.
Danny: Koh, I don’t think that’— oh, nevermind.
Payton: This is cause for celebration!
Part 6
Payton: There’s only one way to celebrate a success like this!
You and your friends all gather at Payton’s house for a big party!
Payton: This is the best… party… EVER! I’m so glad the blog is finally back to its original purpose.
Julian: What’s that?
Payton: Don’t you remember? The blog was supposed to be by us, for us. It was supposed to be a way to connect with all the new students at this school!
Autumn: But we lost sight of that when people started spreading crazy rumors on it.
Payton: Exactly. Hiding behind anonymous usernames enabled people to say hurtful things without thinking about the consequences.
Sakura: Not anymore!

Payton: Woohoo!
