Requirements
Between classes, Dylan trudges past the lockers, alone. He nods hello to you.
Danny: Hey, Dylan, how’s your week going?
Dylan: As new trees grow from the rotting bones of the old... so begins another week of school.
Dylan continues down the hall. Just then, Payton runs up!
Payton: OMG, did Dylan seriously just talk to you? He never talks to anybody! What’d he say? Tell me everything!
Danny: Dylan was just saying hi... or at least I think it was a ‘hi’. Why are you interested?
Payton: Listen, Danny, I’ve been doing a lot of prep work for a school club fair this week, something to showcase how this school has a place for everyone! I mean, this is basically the happiest place on earth! But poor Dylan is always so sullen and dreary... and all that black! He must be so depressed!
Danny: I don’t know, Payton. Maybe Dylan is happy the way he is.
Payton: Who would ever be happy being sad? We need to do something to cheer him up!
Danny: I have a feeling you’re about to suggest a--
Payton: SHOPPING SPREEEEE!
Requirements
You and Payton find Mia setting up the cheerleading team’s booth for the upcoming club fair.
Mia: Payton! I’ve been looking everywhere for you! Here, I brought you some color swatches.
Payton: Um, swatches?
Mia: Hello?! You said you’d make all the decorations red and gold to match the cheer quad’s pom-pom colors, remember? To make sure we get the most attention?
Payton: Oh! Of course I remember! But right now Danny and I need your help! We’re taking Dylan to the mall for an emergency fashion intervention! He’s gloomy 24/7, but once we get him out of that Edward Scissorhands ensemble and into some pastels, he’ll cheer up in no time!
Mia: Now? Are you crazy? Doesn’t it look like we’re busy?
Payton: Mia! With great style comes great responsibility! And isn’t this club fair all about making this school a happier place? Our classmate needs us!
Mia: Well... fine. But this had better not take all day!
Time - 6 hours
Later, at a trendy boutique in the mall...
Dylan: None of these clothes are really my style, Payton.
Payton: But the cornflower blue sweater looks so cute and fun! Doesn’t it make you feel like a big, happy Easter egg?
Danny: Dylan, did you see any outfits you liked?
Dylan: Actually...
You, Mia, and Payton follow Dylan into another store, where black metal is playing over the speakers! Dylan disappears into a changing room... and comes out a minute later looking exactly the same!
Dylan: Now this outfit really speaks to my soul.
Payton: Um... isn’t that the same black outfit you were already wearing?
Dylan: What are you talking about? I was wearing ‘midnight’. This one is ‘obsidian’. They’re entirely different! Anyway, many thanks for inviting me out, friends. Your kindness is a balm that soothes my tender heart.
Mia: Uh, Danny? Was that sarcasm? I literally cannot tell.
While Dylan buys the ‘new’ outfit at the register...
Payton: Why does Dylan still only want to wear that morbid black?! Shopping always makes me feel like the happiest girl in the world!
Mia: That’s because you always are the happiest girl in the world, Payton.
Payton: Huh? That’s not... I mean... Well, there just has to be an outfit that would cheer up Dylan, right?
Danny: Guys, clothes don’t decide your feelings. Your feelings decide your clothes. The black is just how Dylan chooses to express himself.
Payton: Of course! The clothes don’t come first... we need to work on his whole attitude!
Payton pulls our her cell phone and starts texting.
Payton: We need to get in touch with Dylan’s inner feelings! I bet Autumn will know what to do!
Requirements
You, Payton, and Dylan meet at the Artist Hangout, where Autumn is painting the art club’s booth for the fair in a beautiful sky blue.
Autumn: Hey guys! Just give me a minute to finish up here. The art club is really going to shine now that Payton’s color-coordinating the gym decorations!
Payton: Huh? Oh, uh, yup! Sky blue, just like I promised...
Danny: Wait a minute, didn’t you tell--
Payton: Er, hey! Autumn, have you met Dylan? We were hoping to paint some happy things together!
Dylan: Did you do this painting, Autumn? I sense a great yearning in it. The sun’s rays, struggling against a relentless fog... desperate to be seen, to be recognized.
Autumn: You... you feel that too?
Payton: Happy things, Autumn!
Time - 8 hours
Autumn: Okay, everyone, I want you all to think of something that makes you happy. Then pour that emotion into the painting!
Danny: Hmmm... A sunset!
Soon, everyone’s finished painting!
Payton: Wow, Danny! Now that’s a pretty sunset! Makes me feel like I’m walking on the beach with a hot date!
Autumn: So peaceful, but so vibrant! Great job blending the burning hues of the sun into the cool night sky.
Dylan: Yes. There is such calm beauty in the inevitable. All things come to an end.
Payton: That’s not what... grr!
Autumn: And what did you paint, Dylan?
Dylan: In my work, the solid black canvas is the universe, and this tiny little skull in the corner is me.
Payton: This was your happy thought?!
Dylan: It’s comforting to have perspective of your own insignificance... and yet, all the emptiness that surrounds it makes the tiny skull that much more important.
Payton: Ughhh, no! Just look at mine, okay? This is how you paint something happy!
Danny: Wow, a unicorn flying over a mountain of candy? That might be the happiest thing I’ve ever seen!
Autumn: I like the way you even used bright colors for the shadows! Very Van Gogh.
Dylan: Indeed. It seems Payton hasn’t allowed any darkness to exist in her world.
The next day...
Payton: Dylan’s as sad as ever! I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong!
Danny: Why is this so important to you? I’ve never seen you get obsessed like this--
Suddenly, you’re interrupted by Julian coming around the corner.
Julian: There you are, Payton. You’re still decorating the gym turf green for club fair, right? The varsity football team needs tons of new sign-ups, so--
Payton: I’m on it, okay? I just need to... take care of something first.
Danny: Payton’s trying to cheer up Dylan.
Payton: Nothing’s working! Not buying new clothes, not thinking happy thoughts...
Julian: You can’t just tell someone to dress happy or think happy, Payton. Have you tried, you know, actually doing something that makes them happy?
Payton: Ooh! That gives me an idea!
Requirements
Julian: Hey, Dylan! Have you eaten yet?
Payton: Danny and I were gonna go grab a picnic lunch with Julian!
Dylan: A picnic? I haven’t had one since the idyllic days of my nigh-forgotten youth. Where shall we feat on once-living things for sustenance?
Julian: Uh, the picnicky... place?
Dylan: Not to worry, Julian. I happen to know a perfect spot.
Time - 12 hours
Payton: Where are we going, Dylan? Like, some special sunny place?
Dylan: Special, yes. Many are the hours I’ve spent in quiet contemplation while the wind whispers against the crumbling stones.
Payton: St... stones?
Dylan beckons you through a wrought-iron gate and into...
Payton: A cemetary?!
Danny: Oh boy...
Dylan: This willow tree will shade us from the daystar while we enjoy out lunch.
Payton: But... but... there are people buried here!
Julian: Come on, Payton, we’re not disturbing anyone. Besides, I don’t think Mrs. Chapman over there would mind a little company.
Julian points at a weather-beaten headstone nearby.
Julian: Whoa, cool! This lady lived in the 1800s! I didn’t know this graveyard was so old! What was life even like back then?
Dylan: Simpler, I think, but harder. I often wonder what kind of person I would be if I had to struggle for the things I now take for granted.
Julian: For real. Back at Hearst I knew a lot of people who never worked for anything. Seems like a little bit of strife builds character.
Payton: Ugh, not you too! Why is everyone so obsessed with being sad? Why can’t you all just be happy like you’re supposed to?
Payton storms off!
Danny: I’d better go after her. You guys wait here.
Requirements
You catch up to Payton at the forested outskirts of the cemetery, She’s wiping tears from her eyes.
Danny: Payton, are you... crying?
Payton: Sniff! Huh? No! You’re so silly, Danny! Sniff! I’m just... allergic to sad things. I mean, why would Dylan even want to come here? So weird, right?
Danny: You’ve been acting even weirder, Payton. This obsession with cheering him up... and telling Mia, Autumn, and Julian different stories about the club fair--
Payton: What? Now you want me to explain myself? Why does everyone always want stuff from me? They want and want and want!
Danny: Whoa!
Payton claps a hand over her mouth!
Payton: OMG, Danny... I can’t believe I just snapped at you!
Time - 10 hours
Payton: I’m sorry I yelled at you, Danny... it’s just... I think I’ve really messed things up. I got so frazzled with planning the club fair that I... might have accidentally promised everyone that I’d decorate it with different colors.
Danny: Payton... Who cares? Do what you want! You don’t have to do anything for anyone else.
Payton: I wish it were that easy... but everyone expects my events to be perfect. They expect me to be perfect. But I don’t want you to worry about me. I just have to put on a happy face, and I’ll get through this. Woooooohoooo! Happiness! See? Piece of cake! Sniff!
Danny: Payton, I’m not so sure it’s healthy to--
Just then, a shadow rustles in the trees beyond the cemetery! Payton squeaks and hides behind you!
Payton: Eeeeep! A ghost!
The shadow steps out from the trees... it’s Dylan!
Dylan: I’m not a ghost, Payton... at least not yet. But I see in your eyes that you are haunted by something...
Payton: Gasp!
Requirements
Dylan: I sense a darkness.
Payton: Nope! Not from me! No darkness here!
Dylan: You know, I used to be a lot like you, Payton. I was a complete social butterfly in middle school.
Payton: You? No way!
Dylan: Yup. I hosted events and threw parties for the whole school. I was even King of my school’s winter dance... But then I realized, people expected me to be like that all the time. So whenever I was sad, I put up walls... But all those walls did was keep my friends out. That’s true loneliness.
Payton: So what you’re saying is... I should let myself be sad sometimes?
Dylan: I’m saying you must always be true to yourself. Besides... when you confront the darkness in life, it only makes the bright spots that much brighter.
Payton: You’re right, Dylan... I’m so sorry. I didn’t understand that you were just being true to yourself. I guess I just thought that if I could keep you happy... I could keep me happy.
A cold breeze blows through the cemetery, making Payton shiver! Dylan takes off his black coat and puts it over Payton’s shoulders.
Payton: Hey... this outfit of yours is actually pretty cute!
Dylan: Of course it is. Black goes with everything.
Payton: Wait! OMG, Dylan, you’re a genius! You just gave me the best idea everrrr!
Requirements
Back on campus, you lead Mia, Autumn, and Julian toward the school gym.
Danny: This way, guys! Payton says everything’s set up for the club fair!
Julian: I bet you guys the varsity football booth gets the most sign-ups! Payton’s decorating the gym in turf green for us!
Mia: She is not! Payton promised me she’d do it in red and gold for the cheer squad!
Autumn: She did? But she told me she’d decorate it in sky blue to match the art club booth. Hey, what’s going on?
Mia: I’ll tell you what! That girl’s playing us!
Julian: So not cool!
Danny: Well, she says she figured out what to do, so I guess we’ll just have to see...
You push open the doors to the gym... and everyone gasps!
Mia: Wait, what is all this?!
Time - 11 hours
You and your friends find Payton and Dylan adding the last streamers, posters, and balloons... all of them black!
Julian: I don’t get it... why is the whole gym decorated like a really peppy funeral?
Mia: What the heck, Payton? You promised us--
Payton: I know. I got overwhelmed, and I messed up. But I figured out how to make everyone’s club look good... Ta-da! It’s a black tie affair! The classy formal decor makes the colors of the club booths pop even more, instead of distracting from them! Because black goes with everything!
Julian: Well... this does look pretty swanky.
Autumn: I like it too. It’s elegant. Besides... it wouldn’t be fair if Payton only helped one of us.
Mia: I guess you’re right... I mean, I do want to beat you guys fair and square. Even though I totally asked Payton first.
Julian: Same. Sorry for putting you in a tough spot, Payton.
Payton: No, I’m sorry that I didn’t open up to you guys when I was overwhelmed. You’re my friends. I don’t have to pretend with you, and Dylan helped me see that.
Payton squeezes Dylan into a tight hug!
Dylan: Wha...
Payton: Get in here, everyone! Group hug!
Payton: Okay, people! The students are about to arrive! Let’s kick off this club fair partyyyy!
Danny: It’s not a party, Payton.
Payton: Fine, let’s kick off this regular club fair with a party-like atmosphere!
Requirements
Hundreds of students fill the gym, eagerly visiting all of the club booths!
Julian: Read it and weep! I got fourteen people to sign up for varsity tryouts!
Mia: Not bad. Worse than my fifteen sign-ups, but not bad.
Julian: Well... who said I was done? I’m just getting warmed up!
Payton: Eeee! This club fair turned out perfect!
Dylan: What about you? Are you back to being Perfect Payton?
Payton: No way. I’m really sad about my aunt getting divorced, and I’m super stressed about this chemistry test on Friday... But I have great friends that I can talk to. Now I know I don’t have to bottle it all up.
Dylan: That’s it, Payton. When you wear the darkness on your outside, it can’t suffocate your inside.
Payton: Speaking of what to wear on the outside... I’m thinking my wardrobe could use some edgy black. Want to come shopping with me, for real this time?
Dylan: That would make me very happy.
Payton: It would? OMG, I FINALLY DID IT!
