You, Payton, and Julian are relaxing in the Prep Hangout after school.
Payton: Julian, I’ve been meaning to tell you... I’m loving your sports posts on My School Story!
Julian: Thanks, Payton. Autumn and I have been working pretty hard on it.
Payton: It totally shows. You have the most active comments section on the blog! That post you wrote about the last volleyball game had, like, sixty comments!
Danny: Whoa, nice! What’re people saying?
Julian pulls up his latest blog post on his laptop and scrolls through the comments.
Danny: Wow, Julian! All these comments are really positive. They especially seem to love what you said about the middle blocker.
Payton: What did Julian write about the blocker?
Danny: Hmm, let me find it... ‘The opposing team had a solid line-up, but the middle blocker was clearly not on his game. After he let three spikes past in a row, it was pretty obvious that he was better off on the bench than on the court.’
Julian: Pretty good, huh?
Danny: Your fans sure seem to think so!
Autumn walks into the Prep Hangout carrying a flash drive, her camera slung over one shoulder.
Autumn: Oh, there you are, Julian.
Time - 9 hours
Autumn: Here are the pictures from last night’s match, Julian. Sorry they’re a little late.
Payton: Oooh new pics! Can we get a sneak peek?
Julian: Sure!
Julian takes Autumn’s flash drive and plugs it into his computer. You and Payton crowd around him to look at the screen.
Danny: These pictures are so good, Autumn! I love that action shot where the player’s about to spike the ball!
Payton: And this block! You’ve really mastered this sports photography stuff!
Autumn: Thanks, you guys! I just got a new camera with a faster shutter speed, so it’s really doing all the work for me...
Julian: Don’t be modest, Autumn. Your pictures rock!
Payton: OMG, wait... is that Koh?!
Payton points to a familiar face in the background of one of Autumn’s volleyball shots.
Julian: It is! I had no idea she even liked sports!
Autumn: Aw, look at her cheering!
Danny: It looks more like she’s yelling to me...
Julian: Autumn, you’re still going to the match tonight, right?
Autumn: Of course! My camera and I are ready to take on this tournament!
Julian: Let’s just hope the volleyball team is as ready as you!
Payton: When’s the game? Danny and I can help cheer!
Autumn: That would be awesome!
Julian: The match is starting soon... let’s head out!
Requirements
You, Julian, Autumn, and Payton head over to the gym for the volleyball match. You see Calivin and Alex grabbing some water on the bench.
Julian: Aw, man! Looks like we missed the first game.
Payton: First game?
Julian: Yeah! A volleyball match is best two out of three. So, even though it looks like we lost the first game, we can still win the match! Go Alex! Go Calivin! You can do it!
They glance up at the sound of their names and wave to your group as they prep for the next game.
Payton: Oh look! There’s Koh up in the stands! She really does yell loudly at volleyball matches.
Koh: You call that a spike?! My grandma can hit better than that! Oh, hey guys.
You and your friends find seats in the bleachers next to Koh.
Payton: Hey, Koh! What’ve you been up to lately? I feel like I haven’t seen you in forever.
Koh: Didn’t you see my new blog page? I just added it.
Julian: Oh yeah! ‘Destroy It Yourself’ is awesome!
Danny: Destroy It Yourself? What’s that mean?
Koh: It’s my DIY page where I show you how to destroy stuff!
Payton: Sounds, uh, right up your alley!
Julian: Hey, I didn’t know you were so into sports, Koh.
Koh: What’s not to like about shouting at people and calling them names? Where have sports been all my life?!
Autumn: Um... Koh? I don’t think that’s what sports are all about...
Koh: Shh... the first game’s about to start!
Time - 12 hours
Calivin: Umph!
Calivin sends a serve flying over the net, starting the next game! But the other team’s outside hitter jumps up and spikes the ball back for a point!
Calivin: Let’s go, guys! We can do it!
Alex: Great serve, Calivin! We’ll get ‘em next time!
The teams exchange points back and forth!
Julian: Our blockers had better shape up... if we don’t win this game, we lose the match!
Koh: Come on, Alex! Where’s the defense?!
Payton: Koh! Don’t distract the players!
Koh: Bite me!
Finally, the other team is at match-point.
Autumn: They just need one more point to win! We can’t let them score anymore!
Payton: Go Alex! Go Calivin!
The two teams rally, keeping the ball alive until...
Alex: Ooomph!
Alex spikes the ball over the net, and it hits the ground!
Koh: Yeah! Our point! Go Alex!
Autumn: Wait a second, Koh. What’s the ref saying?
Julian: Oh, you’ve gotta be kidding me!
The other team erupts into cheers!
Danny: What happened?
Julian: The side ref called the ball out-of-bounds! We lost!
Danny: We lost?!
Julian: These refs are the WORST! After a comeback like that, our team deserves to win!
Koh: I can’t believe we lost!
Julian: The other team must’ve paid the refs off! That call’s the only reason we lost! THis game was a disaster! I can’t believe I have to write a blog post about this...
Requirements
The next day, you’re talking about the game with Payton and Koh when Julian joins you.
Danny: Hey, Julian! Are you still bummed about last night’s game?
Julian: Eh, not really. You’ve gotta have a short memory in sports. I mean, the next game’s tonight.
Payton: So soon?
Julian: It’s a fast-paced tournament. I have to make sure I keep the sports page updated every day!
Danny: Did you post about last night’s game already?
Julian: Sure did.
Payton checks the blog on her phone.
Payton: OMG, have you seen this, Julian? Your post already has about a hundred comments!
Danny: Seems like you were still a little mad when you were writing! ‘This game was a lesson in how not to play volleyball, taught by the other team.’
Koh: Oh I love this line! ‘The only thing worse than their playing was the refereeing. The refs clearly were paid to make that last call.’
Danny: Whoa.
Time - 14 hours
You, Payton, Koh, and Julian are looking at Julian’s latest post on the school blog.
Koh: Heh. This is pretty funny stuff, Julian.
Julian: Thanks, Koh. I wasn’t trying to be funny, though... I was just so annoyed after that pathetic display of refereeing incompetence!
Koh: Ha! Good one, Julian!
Payton: Isn’t all that stuff about the other teams kinda mean though? They didn’t play that badly...
Koh: Oh, lighten up, Payton. Trash talk is what sports are all about! And besides, look at all the comments! Everyone loves the new Julian!
Payton: If you say so... what do you think, Danny?
Danny: I think trash talk is a little mean... I agree with Payton. It’s easy to get carried away.
Koh: Well, the commenters all really love Julian’s sense of humor.
Danny: I guess that’s true...
Julian: I’ve never had such positive feedback before. I’m gonna write all of my posts like this from now on!
Payton: Is that really the best idea?
Julian: Of course! This was my most popular blog post to-date! The next game is gonna start soon! See you guys later!
Koh: Wait for me!
Julian and Koh run toward the gym to catch the game.
The next day, Koh finds you at lunch.
Danny: How was the volleyball game, Koh?
Koh: Great! We kicked their butts!
Danny: Nice!
Just then, Autumn marches up to you and slams down her lunch tray.
Autumn: Danny, have you seen Julian? I need to talk to him!
Requirements
Autumn: I need to talk to Julian!
Danny: What’s wrong, Autumn?
Koh: Never ask someone what’s wrong, Danny! Then you have to listen to their problems! Haven’t I taught you anything?
Autumn: This is serious, Koh! Have you guys seen Julian’s post about last night’s game?
Time - 10 hours
Danny: I haven’t read Julian’s most recent blog post yet. What’s wrong with it?
Autumn: It’s so negative! He spent the whole blog post making fun of the other team and criticizing the referees. He doesn’t even mention the score until the last sentence! The post is completely biased and all trash talk! It gives absolutely no description of the game!
Koh: Well, all his trash talk was really popular in his last post.
Autumn: It’s more than just that, though. He turned my photos into a joke!
Autumn whips out her phone and shows you the blog post. In it, Autumn’s photos of the other team’s players have mustaches and horns all over their faces!
Koh: Heh. That’s pretty funny.
Autumn: That’s not the point, Koh! He didn’t even ask if he could change my photos.
Danny: I guess that’s pretty shady...
Koh: Hey! That’s a picture of me. I never said you guys could post pictures of me!
Danny: Where? Oh, in the background?
Koh: I don’t like pictures of me on the internet where anyone can see them. Take it down!
Autumn: All right, all right! I’ll make sure it’s taken down.
Koh: Good!
Just then, Julian joins you at the lunch table.
Autumn: Hey! Julian! I need to talk to you!
Julian: What’s up, Autumn?
Autumn: How could you photoshop my pictures without asking me first? We’re supposed to be partners in this! And this blog post is pure trash talk! There’s hardly any actual information about the game!
Julian: Well, I don’t know if you noticed, but that post is our most popular yet! Everyone loves the smack talk! And the photoshopped pics fit the new direction of the sports page better. You’ve gotta admit, my changes are a huge improvement!
Autumn glares at Julian.
Danny: Uh oh...
Koh: Oh man, this is getting good! I wish I had some popcorn!
Requirements
Julian: I don’t know why you’re having such a problem with my post when all of our commenters loved it so much. It’s not like you can do any better.
Autumn: Oh yeah? Why don’t we find out?
Julian: What?
Autumn: I’m gonna rewrite your blog post! It’ll be unbiased and fair and actually tell the reader what happened in the game. And it’ll be just as popular as yours! Just you wait and see!
Danny: This is gonna be interesting...
Time - 15 hours
The next day, you to meet Autumn at the Artist Hangout.
Autumn: Did you see it? Did you see it?!
Danny: See what?
Autumn: My blog post!
Autumn drags you over to the computer and shows you her re-written post.
Autumn: They loved it! It got even more comments than Julian’s! See look!
Autumn points to a few comments near the top. ‘ReesesPisces: Nice post! Now I actually know what happened in the game!’
Danny: Looks like they really appreciated your post, Autumn.
You scroll deeper into the comments section of Autumn’s blog post: ‘Tobleroner: Wait... didn’t you guys already post about the game? Was there another one? I’m confused.’ ‘MalteserFalcon: This was boring! Where’s the trash talk?’
Autumn: Those other comments weren’t there last time I checked the post!
You and Autumn continue to read through the comments when all of a sudden, the door to the Artist Hangout bursts open. Julian and Koh are standing there, hands on their hips.
Julian: Hey Autumn! Have you seen how much better my post is than yours?
Koh: The people have spoken... and you lose!
Requirements
Julian: I knew your rewrite wasn’t gonna be as good as the original!
Autumn: I got more comments than you!
Danny: Hey, guys--
Julian: Yeah, but most of my comments were positive! Can you say the same?
Koh: Face it, Autumn. The readers thought your post was boring with a capital ‘B’!
Time - 13 hours
Julian: This is what the people want, Autumn! They want to hear me talk smack about the other team! They don’t want to read some boring ‘unbiased’ post that’s just like... ‘Our team hit the ball. The other team hit the ball. The ball hit the court. The other team scored.’
Danny: Julian, that might be a little too--
Autumn: Quit being ridiculous, Julian! The problem with your posts is that no one can even tell what happened because you just make mean jokes instead of actually reporting on the game.
Koh: But Julian’s posts are hilarious!
Autumn: You can be funny without being so mean, Julian.
Just then, Nishan comes barging into the Artist Hangout.
Nishan: There you guys are! I’ve been looking everywhere for you two! Autumn, Julian, the sports page is a mess!
Nishan pulls up short when he notices the tension between Autumn and Julian.
Nishan: Whoa! What’s going on in here?
Requirements
Nishan: I hope I’m not interrupting...
Danny: It’s okay. What’s wrong, Nishan?
Nishan: Well, I was doing some backend work on My School Story, and I noticed that the sports page comments section is going crazy! Everyone is all confused about the two posts about the same game and the changing writing styles. What in the name of Captain Cthulhu is going on?
Time - 17 hours
Nishan: Don’t you guys know that consistency is the key to reader retention!
Julian: I don’t know what you’re talking about, Nishan, but it’s Autumn’s fault that we have two posts about the same game. I was doing just fine on my own.
Autumn: Well, it’s not my fault I had to fix Julian’s terrible post!
Julian: My post wasn’t terrible! Yours was!
Autumn: No, yours was!
Danny: Hey! You two are just talking in circles!
Nishan: Yeah! Petty infighting only leads to confusion and the breakup of superhero teams!
Julian: ...
Autumn: ...
Danny: I think what Nishan is trying to say is you guys are on the same side, and you’re working toward the same goal.
Julian: I guess you’re right. We’ve been so focussed on our fight that we forgot about our readers.
Autumn: Yeah, we don’t want to confuse people. And we both just want to make an amazing sports page. I’m sorry, Julian.
Julian: I’m sorry, too. I shouldn’t have taken control of the page without talking to you first.
Autumn: We need to work on the sports page together from now on.
Julian: Yeah! It needs a little bit of both of us!
Danny: Well, you guys’ll have the chance to redeem yourselves soon, right? When’s the next game?
Julian: It’s tonight! And we’ll be there to cover it!
Autumn: Together!
Requirements
You catch up with Julian and Autumn at the next volleyball match! You slide into the stands next to Payton and Koh just as the other team serves the ball to start the third game!
Koh: You call that a serve?! A baby goat could hit the ball harder!
Danny: Woohoo! Go team!
Julian: You missed a crazy match so far!
Autumn: We won the first game by, like, ten points!
Koh: And then lost the second game by two. We need to get out butts in gear for this last game!
You and your friends watch anxiously as the teams exchange points back and forth...
Payton: I can’t watch! It’s so close!
Autumn: Don’t worry, Payton! We’re gonna win... I can feel it!
Julian: And even if we don’t, I’ll be sure to write a fair blog post with Autumn’s help!
Finally, your team is at match-point!
Julian: One more point! Let’s go!
The other team’s player sets the volleyball, and then their front hitter SMASHES the ball over the net-- But your left blocker jumps up and hits the ball back over the net! The crowd cheers as the ball hits the ground! Your team wins!
Danny: We did it!
Payton: I can’t believe we pulled that off! We need a party to celebrate! My house! Friday night!
Koh: Another party?
Payton: You can never have too many!
A Payton party is the perfect way to celebrate Autumn and Julian making up! But will everything go as planned? Keep playing to find out!
