Autumn: Danny, I’m so glad you decided to come!
Danny: I wouldn’t miss it! You said you’re in a competition?
Autumn: I made a resolution this year to start putting my work out there for the world to see, no matter how scary it is that people might not like it. I applied for a dozen contests, and I actually heard back from one! I’m a finalist in a contest thrown my Georgina Ikemura, the famous photographer! She’s having all of the finalists come out to New York for a week of sightseeing, followed by a glitzy art show where she’ll announce the winner. I’m so nervous... I’m so glad you’ll be there by my side.
Danny: Not just me, Autumn. A bunch of us are coming along!
Autumn: ...really? All the way to New York?
Payton: I MIGHT’VE pulled a few strings and gotten some teachers to arrange a class trip!
Mia: No way is one of MY friends competing in anything without a cheering section.
Autumn: Thank you! Thank you! Wait... that’s just a metaphor, right? You’re not actually planning on cheering inside a chic SoHo art gallery, are you?
Payton: YES WE ARE!
Some time later, you, Autumn, and your classmates pack into a bus headed for New York City.
Autumn: I’m so glad you’re all coming! And I promise we’ll make plenty of time in the city to have fun!
Danny: We should catch a Broadway play!
Julian: And what about pizza? New York is supposed to have great pizza, right?
Payton: And what about Cronuts? WHAT ABOUT CRONUTS?
Autumn: ...what are Cronuts?
There are a dozen more shouts as everyone from your school chimes in!
Autumn: Danny, what do I do? New York is so big! How are we going to see it all?
Danny: Well, there’s a long bus ride to get to New York... That should be plenty of time for some organized students to create an itinerary!
Requirements
Your classmates find seats on the bus, and you make sure to slide in next to Maddie and Brandon.
Maddie: You want US to plan out what we do on the trip? That sounds like it could involve a lot of paperwork...
Brandon: First, we’ll have to do interviews to determine interests, then we’ll have to hold votes... not to mention all the organization and color-coding!
Danny: If you don’t want to help, I’m sure we can find someone else...
Maddie: Are you kidding? We LOVE organization and color-coding!
Maddie and Brandon fist bump!
Danny: Heh... just make sure that we end up at Autumn’s art show in time.
The bus pulls onto the interstate.
Autumn: Next stop... NEW YORK!
Time - 3 hours
After a lengthy ride, the bus pulls over in Battery Park. Maddie and Brandon hand out itineraries to classmates as they disembark.
Maddie: We’ve tallied all the votes and checked them twice...
Brandon: The second time was for fun!
Maddie: It seems the gamers would like to play chess in Central Park...
Brandon: The filmmakers want to visit the Film Forum...
Maddie: And the dancers insist that we visit the New York Ballet.
Payton: ...what about me? I still want a Cronut!
Brandon: We should have time for everything, Payton, but first... we’ve made a special stop to visit a very special lady.
Brandon points out across the bay toward the Stature of Liberty.
Maddie: And we should be just in time to catch a ferry to go meet her!
Your group takes the ferry over to Liberty Island and rides the elevator to the top of the Statue of Liberty’s torch.
Maddie: A beacon of freedom, a source of inspiration for immigrants worldwide...
Brandon: They came here seeking a better life, where they could be free to express themselves and pursue their dreams.
Jeff: ...sort of like our school, huh?
Danny: Sort of.
Julian: Yeah, yeah... enough with the wishy-washy hug fest.
Nishan: We all know the real reason this place is cool. This where they filmed the climax of the first X-Men movie. Snikt!
Danny: Heh... now that we’ve visited the Statue of Liberty, where to next?
Maddie checks the itinerary.
Maddie: That would be... Central Park!
Requirement
First, your group stops over in Central Park.
James: Ahh, the perfect place for a worthy chess match! If I find a worthy challenger, that is...
Autumn: If you don’t mind, I’d prefer to take some photos. These Kwanzan cherry blossom trees are beautiful!
Payton: And I’m going to visit the zoo! They have red pandas! They’re like pandas but red!
Nishan: Um... ordinarily, I would, but Central Park is paradise for birders! Promontory Warbler, here I come!
Julian: And I’m going to... not play chess.
Danny: If no one else wants to, I’ll play.
James: Heh... sure! I’ll try to go easy on you.
A short while later...
James: I move my queen to D5.
Danny: I think you just sunk my battleship!
James: I believe you mean... checkmate!
Time - 4 hours
After Central Park, your group catches a festival at the Film Forum.
Henry: That was buttered-popcorn cinema nirvana! Did you guys enjoy the film?
Autumn: Annie Hall was such a deep meditation on falling in and out of love!
Danny: The only word for it is transplendent... it’s transplendent!
The later, everyone takes a seat to watch the ballet.
Willow: Such exquisite poise, every motion a phrase of visual poetry!
Payton: Not to mention fluffy pink tutus! ME WANT!
As the ballet ends, your group clusters on the street.
Payton: That was amazing, but we still haven’t done what I want to do in New York.
Danny: ...okay, so what is that? Shopping on 5th Avenue? Cronuts?
Payton: For sure! But not JUST that... Don’t you watch TV? I want to sit at a trendy cafe, gossipping about love and guys with my girlfriends.
Requirements
Payton sits down at a table in a ritzy cafe with her girlfriends. She opens up a gold travel box and removes several creme-filled croissant-donut hybrids... Cronuts!
Payton: ‘Once upon a time, a beautiful young girl named Payton came to New York...’
Kate: Uh, who is Payton talking to?
Uma: I think she might be doing television voice-over.
Kimia: ...but we’re not on TV.
Payton: ‘It’s a riddle worthy of the Sphinx. Why are there so many great, dateless girls and no great, dateless guys? What are all the great guys REALLY up to? Only I know... XOXO, AskPayton!’
Mia: Guys, whatever is happening, I think we should just play along. These Cronuts are delish!
Time - 5 hours
Payton and her girlfriends eat their Cronuts and gossip about guys!
Kate: And then the next thing I know, we’re making out in the rain like in The Notebook! He was totally perfect!
Kimia: What I really want to know... who is Payton’s perfect guy?
Payton: ...my perfect guy?
Julian: Yo Payton!
Payton jumps up from the table as Julian walks up.
Payton: Julian! I mean... not Julian! I mean... NOT not Julian! Eeeep!
Julian: ...you okay?
Payton: ...maybe?
Julian: I’m supposed to tell you that the Broadway show is about to start... And we scored three extra seats in the second row! Danny’s going to give them to people who will appreciate sitting up close to the performance.
Requirements
You, Autumn, Carlos, Kate, and the rest of your group take your seats at the Broadway show.
Kate: I can’t wait for the play to start! I’ve heard there’s this AMAZING dance number where they twirl these flashing, electronic batons!
Carlos: ACTUALLY, I’ve heard the real draw is the fantastic ACTING. Apparently, the actress who plays the grieving widow could make a statue cry!
Kate: Just as long as it doesn’t get in the way of the dancing!
Carlos: I think you’ve got that backwards!
Danny: Easy, you two! I’m sure there will be great dancing AND acting!
Autumn: Shh! The lights just dimmed, and the curtains are opening! The show is about to start!
Time - 6 hours
As the play ends, the audience leaps to their feet in a standing ovation.
Danny: That was incredible!
Kate: I have to admit... the acting was incredible. I’m sorry I doubted you, Carlos. That scene with the old dog... it brought me to tears!
Carlos: No way! I was wrong! The dancing really brought the show to life! The way they used those wires to suspend the singing cowboys in the air... just wow.
Danny: What did you think, Autumn?
Autumn: The sets were beautiful, especially that rain forest cabana... I just wish I could have paid more attention to them.
Danny: ...what distracted you?
Autumn: I just kept thinking about the gallery exhibit. I hope Georgina Ikemura likes my photograph.
Danny: Of course, she will! And according to our itinerary, the show is coming up soon... we’d better hurry if we want to get there on time!
Everyone hustles out to the busy New York street.
Autumn: Do you think we’ll make it to the art gallery in time? I’m starting to get worried!
Danny: No problem! We’ll just gail a cab and get there fast!
Payton: Good idea... except hailing a cab in New York City might not be quite as easy as you think...
Requirements
Payton: Remember... hailing a cab in new York is serious business! You’ve got to be aggressive... and make it easy for the cabbie to spot you!
Danny: I’ve got this!
A nearby stoplight changes to green, and dozens of cars go by, including several yellow cabs. A cab driver notices you and begins to pull over to the curb half a block away. You run up to the cab and hop in the back!
Payton: We’re in! Great job, Danny! Next stop is the art gallery!
You lean up to speak with the cabbie.
Danny: Uh, sorry to ask you this, but do you think you can get us to the Ikemura Gallery in a hurry?
The cab driver smiles, nods, and floors the gas pedal!
Payton: EEEEEK!
Julian: AWESOME!
Danny: Uh... let’s just hope we get there in one piece!
The cab zips through a series of sidestreets and back alleys!
Danny: I’m completely lost... where are we?
Payton: Are we sure this guy knows where he’s going?
Danny: I don’t want to end up in a bad neighborhood full of criminals...
Nishan: You mean like Wall Street?
Suddenly, the cab screeches to a halt!
Autumn: Look, Danny... we’re here! We made it to the art show!
Requirements
Autumn charges into the art gallery!
Autumn: This... this is like something out of my dreams! I can’t believe my art is really being shown HERE!
Inside, men and women nod appreciatively at paintings and photographs on the wall. Elaborate sculptures dot the floor.
Autumn: All the art here is from high school students just like me!
Madison: But Georgina Ikemura will only select one as best in show!
Autumn: ...right.
Julian: Why do you look so worried? Nobody out-arts our Autumn!
Time - 7 hours
Your group disperses into the gallery.
Danny: Look at this painting. It’s a vanity mirror with bars from a jail cell. It’s called ‘Prisoner of Beauty’...
Autumn: It’s... it’s beautiful and meaningful!
Madison: And look at this one... it’s thousands of selfies raging in a whirlwind. It’s called Re- Tumbled.
Autumn: The technique is... flawless...
Autumn moves from one work to the next, each more perfect than the next.
Autumn: These... these works of art are all so good...
Mia: So? Yours is good too, right?
Autumn: Yes, but...
Payton: Hey, Autumn, that famous artist lady is getting ready to announce best in show!
Julian: We need to get up front to watch you collect your prize!
Autumn: ...
Requirements
A stately older artist, Georgina Ikemura, approaches the podium.
Isabella: This is it, Autumn! You’re about to be declared a winner!
Kimia: In. The. Bag.
Time - 8 hours
Georgina Ikemura announces the winner... Thomas Chapman from Wisconsin! A cheer goes up from another part of the crowd!
Kimia: What... Autumn didn’t win?!
Isabella: I demand a recount!
Danny: Autumn, I’m sorry... are you going to be okay?
Autumn: Yeah, I’ll be... I’ll be...
Autumn turns away, crossing into the back of the gallery.
Danny: ...Autumn?
On stage, a student goes up to collect a gold plaque from Georgina Ikemura.
Isabella: She looked really upset...
Kimia: I know Autumn’s really hard on herself when it comes to perfecting her art.
Danny: And she doesn’t really put herself out there much. To get rejected here, well... she can’t be feeling great. I’ll go check on her.
Requirements
You find Autumn at the back of the gallery, standing by a window that gazes across the glittering New York skyline.
Danny: Autumn, winning isn’t such a big deal. Don’t be upset.
Autumn: What... no! I’m not upset because I didn’t win...
Danny: ...Oh, then why?
Autumn: I’m upset because I didn’t DESERVE to win. All of the art here is so amazing, so polished... Back home, I’m a big fish in a little pond. But here in New York, the pond is so much bigger... And I feel so incredibly... little... I’m wondering if I even have what it takes to MAKE IT.
Danny: Autumn, you’re incredibly talented, and your art is amazing! Everybody knows that. And even if you didn’t win this time, that doesn’t mean people aren’t enjoying your work. Look over there! That woman is admiring your photo right now!
Autumn: That’s not just any woman... that’s Georgina Ikemura!
Danny: Really? So why are you still here? Go over there and talk to her already!
Time - 9 hours
Autumn talks with Georgina Ikemura and then steps back over to where you’re waiting.

Autumn: I know! I know! I can barely believe it myself!
Several days later, back at school... You’re walking across campus when Autumn sprints by, loaded down with armfuls of art supplies.
Danny: Autumn, there you are! I’ve barely seen you around since we got back from New York!
Autumn: I can’t help it! I’m feeling so inspired! I’m already working on my photographs for the gallery show next year!

Autumn: If I have anything to say about it... absolutely!
